D&D (2024) Suggestions for level 1 one-shot.

My only suggestion is if it's going to do a one-shot to do it at a slightly higher level - 3rd or 5th. Those levels give the characters a bit of a buffer for doing more interesting things and getting away with it, and you can use more interesting and strange foes to throw against them.

I'd tend to agree, or even do a one shot people rarely play at (17-20) for a truly different experience.

But since the OP is a player, I didn't think he has much choice!

I have a 1-shot coming up that I'm making a halfling wizard for. I gave him the criminal background to be able to open locks and stealth behind others to hide better. I changed the quarterstaff to a small staff / cane thing which is more like the large crowbar the background gives him. I made it 1d4 and finesse in case he needs to swing it.

Another vote for the barbarian. Sounds like you have a strong personality concept, which is important because you can "hit the ground running" in roleplay terms.

The warlock sounds like a fun character for a longer campaign, where you could get more use out of your "pokemon."

Hey all,
Having trouble with EN World crashing chrome, so might not be able to stay long. Just wanted to thank people for the suggestions. I ended up going with a noble barbarian 'Teddy Orcevelt.' It was fun...ish.

People mentioned the downfall of level 1 one-shots above, and they are spot on. DM (not our most experienced DM) hit us with a mob of low-CR enemies that effectively TPK'd us, excepting a deus ex machina save. The roleplay was good, though.
