In a hole in the ground… they found a body.

I know! Here we are, in the middle of the beautiful, bucolic Riding, with its neat hedgerows and picturesque taverns and delightful crumpet shops and little village greens, and we’ve got a murder to solve! It’d be unthinkable if this wasn’t the third murder this week. The bodies are just piling up. Better get cracking on this mystery – after a quick snack, of course. No detecting on an empty tummy!

In Shires Out, you’re playing amateur detectives in a cosy-fantasy setting that might somewhat resemble a well-known and well-beloved intellectual property behemoth. Your band of plucky investigators solve mysteries (quite often, murder mysteries) that crop up with remarkable regularity in the lovely little village you’ll design together. Gameplay mixes deduction and investigation with comic absurdity and plenty of cakes. No giant tentacle monsters or vampiric conspiracies, we’ve quite enough of those, thank you.

It’s written by Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan, and powered by the GUMSHOE rules engine and rather a lot of sugar. GUMSHOE’s been adapted to the, ah, idiosyncratic methodologies of Halfling detectives, with abilities like Nosiness, Gossip and Genealogy taking centre stage.

I read about the gumshoe system only recently, it seems like it'd be an excellent fit for this particular game. When I read the entry you provided to a not-interested-in-rpgs-usually friend, they thought it was cool! So there's draw for a game like this.
"Ms. Marple, but she's a hobbit" is a great pitch and yeah, Gumshoe is a great fit for this.

I currently have a group of players in a campaign using Adventures in Middle Earth. They've been enjoying it, but TBH I'm so jaded on D&D 5e that I'd be happier running the setting with a different TTRPG. I lent some of my players my copy of The One Ring, but they weren't exactly thrilled with it. I've played GUMSHOE and enjoyed it, so Shires Out might be another option.
