Gurps? Where do I start?

Is it thieasable for some one who has experience learning new rules sets to just get the 'characters' book and trust his own judgment on expanding the rest of the rules?

You might be able to get away with it , if you use it with GURPS Lite.

Not really in my experience. Gurps encourages you to make your own skills, advantages and disadvantages. So long as you and the players agree that the point cost is fair - you're free to make anything you want. Improvising on the rules is a little trickier if you're not familar with them... but that may be a reflection of my usual philosophy: 'It's not in the book!? Well then - Make it Up!'

I'd suggest if you can at all get the chance, get some copies to flip through at your LFGS and see which one to grab if you absolutely have to choose. You're your own best judge in those regards. Or look for 3rd edition which is a bit slimmer for cost as it would be used and comes all in one book. ;)

Gurps Lite doesn't have anything that Gurps Characters and Campaign doesn't. Lite its a very abbreviated version that briefly explains combat and provides some examples of traits/advantages/disadvantages.

I don't think you can extrapolate GURPS 4Ed rules from just the Character book. You need both.

Yep. It'd be like trying to DM a D&D game with only the Player's Handbook. Possible, but...

Hmmm. In my Senior year in High school, I taught my self 3.5 (I skipped 3.0) using just the Monster manual and the Player's Handbook which I had rented from the library in a matter of three days, and ran a successful campaign. Looking back, the DM fiats I made for skill dcs are the same as today ( I got the DMG a year later, for Christmas) Ok, It potentialy could have been a bad idea not playing with out the DMG, but at our age now, and every one of us being in college, they can understand if i screw up with a house rule. Its not like I (or any other dm) has done that before.

GURPS is a fun system and has potential of running infinite campaigns :) In fact, the base campaign for GURPS is one of Infinite Worlds.
As a side about prices, keep in mind thaht all the books seem to be available in PDF from the e23 store. Might be a more economical way of tackling the system ...

Except Steve Jackson has said the two basic books will not be offered electronically, just the supplements.

As for playing with just the one book, you'll find that hard to do. Volume 1: Characters is 307 pages of character building and just four pages of combat (which I believe is the same information that appears in the Lite version. Volume 2: Campaigns starts with about 100 pages of combat, making success rolls and dealing with damage.
