GURPS with Armor Class and no Dodge

Folks:
I starting toying around with the idea to retool/HomebrewGURPS to use Armor Class oppose to armor reducing damage. In addition, Dodgenever really sat well with me, so I have contemplated to ditch that as well. The idea goal is to have something similar to AD&D and AD&D 2E but use3d6 to get a nice bell curve.

I suspect that I would be easier to retool GURPS to do thisoppose to creating my own system; however, I have started looking into otheravenues.

Looking for ideas or what others have done.

Why? One of the biggest draws of GURPS (for me) is that includes active defenses. There are many games with AC/static defense numbers which is why GURPS kind of stands out.

What about dodge is troubling? Perhaps the concept can be made less troubling with some tweaks. How would blocks & parries fit into the AC system?

I wouldn’t say I have a problem with how GURPS work. It isvery true what you say and how Damage Reduction and Dodge are features, whichmake standout enabling it to be different. I too like these features; however, Ishould have used better worlds to give greater clarity to my initial post –

After playing GURPS for some time, I have decided thatabstract combat works better for my style of play and how I structure myadventures. ++laugh++ guess this is due with me coming from the Traveller andAD&D world. Yet due to the latter, I was hoping that I could give the samelevel of abstract combat system to GURPS with still using the majority orhomebrewed rule set.

These days I only have a copy of 4th edition Lite– I sold most of my 2nd and 3rd edition stuff to feed myWEG Star Wars addiction.

So – I guess I am looking for ideas or how I could get anabstract combat system, and still use the core system of GURPS.

Other ideas or suggestions are welcomed.

Thank you
JJ

If you want an abstract combat system I would start with another game system. Figure out what you like about GURPS and find another system that also has that but is more abstract. The entire point of GURPS is the focus on details. You are picking one of the most detailed games to make abstract and making your goal very difficult.

Tell us what is it that you like about GURPS and maybe we can find another system you might like better.

I like the idea of the point buy system; however, this aspect is not really required. What I really like about GURPS – is the skill system. In addition, I like the 3d6 roll under skill level mechanics, and it is the latter – what I am really looking for. Yet, a 2d6 system would be ok –

Now, I have toyed around with the idea to try and retool AD&D 1st or 2nd edition to use 3d6 or 2d6, since the Non-weapon proficiencies already worked on this principle (ie. roll under target); however, I got stuck with some of the other aspects – like assigning armor class bonuses/penalties and other miscellaneous bonuses and penalties to a 3d6 or 2d6 mechanics.
Thank you for the help.

What you want is the Hero System. It is an excellent point buy system. I think that it uses the dice mechanic that you are looking for. It has been a while. Go check it out.

There is also the Fusion system which is a variant rules lite version of the Hero system.
