While reading the two gender treads I started thinking about the various times I've seen people play characters who are not their gender. I'm curious as to how often this happens.

I'm a guy, and most of my characters tend to be male as well (except for in computer games, where it is reversed), yet I have played female characters on occasion.

My DM won't let us play characters that are not our gender. He says it makes things weird because it's hard to role play from a perspective that you, by nature, cannot understand...

It has never bothered me, though because, I can't think of a single circumstance where I would want to play a non-femal character.

It varies quite a lot from group to group. Some people are fine with the idea of cross-gender role playing, while others get a bit wigged by the idea. Personally, I've never had a problem with it. After all, if you can picture one of your friends as a elf, orc or troll, it's not really all that much more difficult to picture them as an elf, orc or troll of either gender.

I'm a guy, and I've played both male and female characters, with about 75% of my characters being male.

I've mainly played male characters, but I have done the occassional female. It's not all that hard; just pattern yourself after a female fantasy figure and the rest is fairly easy.

I DM most of the time...i.e. I roleplay EVERYONE. Males, females. I don't care, and neither does the group. I've never understood the problem some people seem to have with it.

Umm... anyone else notice there is no girl playing a guy character option?

"Yes, I'm a girl and I've played girl characters" or "No, I'm a girl and I've only ever played girl characters"

Are you a yes maam or a no maam? ;)

I've played female characters. Never was an issue at any table I've played at, because I didn't really ham up the fact they were female.

I guess the "wigginess" of playing an opposite gender character depends on what gender means in a given campaign. If you're roleplaying encounters of flirtation and sexual attraction, things may get strange for some players. But if you're just wearing the "skin" of an opposite gender for the sake of a role in a campaign that doesn't focus on what a certain sex means, it shouldn't really matter.

Most of my characters have been female. I can't say why, just that I feel drawn to play such characters.

I don't play them as sex-crazed sluts, I just play. On a couple online D&D games before other players found out I was a guy, they thought I was female. Heh, not sure if thats good or bad. ;)

Me too. I almost picked no/no because I've never played a female PC. But as DM, I assume the roles of all kinds of NPCs. I would say probably more male than female, but I think my ability to act out a variety male roles is probably deeper, being male myself. I do allow players to run cross-gender NPCs, although I tend to disfavor it since I think few people are capable of doing it well. As for myself, I wouldn't choose to run a cross-gender PC unless I had a really vivid concept in mind that I was sure I could roleplay consistently.
