Gygax is the master mapper?

From Robin Laws' blog:

Just before the holiday I conducted my interview with Gary Gygax for 40 Years Of Gen Con.

Among many other things, I asked him to describe the Horticultural Hall, the central venue for the convention during its very early days in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

Gary’s description was extremely systematic and thorough. When you ask the co-creator of D&D to describe a room, he describes a room.

Well that just makes sense.

How many rooms has he had to describe, both verbally and written, over the years?

Isn't this the First Dungeon Master we're talking about?

:D

No mistake, Gary has made some very good maps during his reign. He is definitely part of my Top Three Dungeon Mappers Triumvirate, sharing this position with Paul Jaquays (excellent 3D perspective) and Bob Bledsaw (just very good at it).

Wait until you see the Castle Zagyg maps. I only saw two big pages and was blown away. Plus Peter Bradley turning them into "publishing quality" isn't going to hurt anything.

Oh, I have been doing that for a while.
"I waited patiently for Castle Zagyg, and all I got was the Yggsburgh supplement."

With the district modules, to boot!

;)

Well, we are promised the first half of the two boxed sets in time for GenCon. At least I think it is boxed sets, I'll have to re-read the news release, because they were also considering hard covers with slip sleeves for the maps. I think the maps ended up being so HUGE, they had to go with a boxed set. Two of them.

Not official news on their website, but this is what Steve posted in the Upcoming Products forum:

This product has been divided into two products, both box sets, the first is scheduled for release at Gencon 2007.

Thanks,
Steve

Not for Castle Zagyg. They have stated he has turned everything in for that. Other projects are being slowed down, maybe. Since he sounds more like an editor rather than the author, he may be able to handle editing. I don't know of anything else he is lead author on, and can't be continued with minimal guidance from Gary. So I am not sure Gary's illness is really slowing down anything right now. Just making us all worried.

So any hold ups are going to be fully on the Trolls shoulders for Zagyg from here on out. Which, admittedly, they themselves are notorious for being slow and very late with products. But they have gotten better. Months, instead of a year or more. With the exception of Yex. That one is a full year late. But it is for d20, so I haven't really cared. There has been plenty of other d20 products to keep me happy, from other companies.
