Gygax's Canting Crew: Opinions?

Interesting comments here...

I was one of those that disliked the book. I hang around RPG.net much more than here, but I do read both forums. ENWorld is too much of a D20 fanboy hangout for me though, and there is not much variety of interests and opinions when it comes to games... Just my honest opinion, not a slam at anyone.

In fact, I play a lot of D&D and D20. I own many of the books, and I play regularly. But I also enjoy a broad range of games besides D20/ D&D. That doesn't mean I "have it in for D20", just that there is a whole range of other games out there that those "too lazy to learn any other system" will probably never discover, and that is sad...

I own literally hundreds of RPGs, and thousands of RPG books (modules, sourcebooks, etc.). I bought them over the course of 23 years. I've read them all, but I'll admit that I've probably only played a few dozen of them.

So I think I have a wide-ranging spectrum of interests.

But since I like D&D3e and d20 quite a bit, I figure a place called "EN World - d20 News & Reviews" is the place to discuss that specific system. If I want to discuss other games, I can do it here occasionally, but I often go to sites where the game I want to discuss is the main focus of the site. That is, if I want to discuss, say, TORG beyond anything to do with d20, I'll go to a TORG site, or a site that is intended for general discussion of any and all RPGs.

As for the Canting Crew...well, I've looked at it several times in the store. The content looks interesting, but there is simply not enough of it to justify me spending $35 on it. I would have snapped it up if it had been a softback for $20.

Interesting you should say that. I'm not sure I'd agree. I myself am a fairly regular visitor to these boards even though I've only played 3e a handful of times, and am a person who's very fearfull of everything being turned into a d20 setting. Our small group is a long time Rolemaster group, although we've played dozens of other games.

I'm quite comfortable here. Maybe it due to the fact of my long D&D roots and the reason for my lack of 3e play isnt dislike of the system. Or the fact that I still have a selection of 3e/D20 materials that I get a fair amount of use out of even with playing 3e.

Mainly though, I think its because of the generally friendly atmosphere on these boards.

I saw it in the store. It is not worth the price. While the cant dictionary is intersting, I 've seen it, and other dictionaries in Dragon. I don't like it when a magazine that only costs a few dollars uses space on a dictionary for a language I'll never use, let alone when there is space in a very long chapter in an expensive book.

Of course, if you are interested in the historical aspects of a society of thieves, beggars, assassins...then it could be a good book for you. I know that I tend to buy books about magic, even if they are only a good read.
