Half-dragon dragon?

the Jester

Legend
The half-dragon template can be added to any living corporeal creature. Sooo... would it be crazy to have, say, a green dragon with the half-red dragon template to simulate a crossbreed??

Is it ridiculous to do something like this? As a dm, does this idea make you go, "Oooh, cool," or, "Wow, lame"? As a player, would you be taken aback in the sort of pleasant "oh, crap, our dm's after us" way or the "gosh, why can't our dm do cool stuff instead" way?

Cross posting to rules and general monster talk.... ;)

There's actually that exact example given in Savage Species, I think. I know I saw it somewhere in a WoTC book.

I do think it's stupid, but that doesn't mean it's against the rules. I think it's funny the way crossbreeds in D&D are almost always a lot better than their parents (the half elf being a notable exception).

Savage Species specifically allows half-celestial celestials (like, say, an archon and a guardinal having kids), so I don't see why you can't have half-dragon dragons.

That's definitely crazy, but kind of cool. I'd hate to have it inflicted on me, but, then again, they don't get that much more...an elemental immunity, some more damage, HPs, a bit more natural armor, etc. So, it's not overwhelmingly more powerful, but just enough to be worth the XP.

My thought was that you'd always use the weaker dragon as the base creature, and apply the templated version of the weaker type... that'd tend to even it out a little.

I was debating the half-dragon dragon for months, and am using either that or another similar concept (half-fiend dragon, perhaps, or half-dragon fiend...?) tomorrow in my game. I really just want an excuse to have a squadron of glider-flying kobolds wheeling out of the skies of Acheron at the party.

You can have a Half-Fiend (insert Evil Outsider here), too, which seems even sillier.

I'd be disinclined to allow a creature being two halves of its heritage, myself.

On the other hand, I like the idea of Half-Fiend Hound Archons and Half-Celestial Succubi-- and there's a few cosmological theories I've seen that might support why such a thing would be far more powerful than their normal kin.

Agreed, I wouldn't bother with that. My thinking is that you always apply the template of the stronger half to the weaker dragon type; for instance, I used a half-blue shadow dragon (apply half-dragon template to shadow dragon base).

Personally I think it sounds weird. So a half-blue shadow dragon would only have 1 electric breath per day, but multiple shadow breath? If blue was the dominant type, shouldnt that be the one that it is based off of?

I would go with the half-fiend shadow dragon, or a half-fiend shadow dragon before a half-x dragon shadow dragon. But thats just me ;)

For the record, I would be afraid, as a PC....
