Half-Dragons

I have a player who is playing a half-gold dragon and I made the assumption that since he gets the imunity to fire that the gold dragon has the cold vulnerability went along with it.

However, this is not the case as far as my research can find. His subtype becomes (dragon) not Dragon - Fire.

This just seems odd to me to give all the benifits but none of the weaknesses to a template.

I mean in the Savage Species the Half Gold dragon does work out to a ECL of +5. (this is bumped up based upon the 6d10 breath attack, which is a mighty ability.

I was just wondering if anyone knew why they get the imunity but not the vulnerablity.

I'm not going to change his character or anything (I have kept him at ECL +3, since we started with old input) its just a general question to the group. Usually there are some drawbacks associated with strenghs to balance them.

On a side note would this imunity without vulnerabilty add to the ECL as computed in the SS.

Fire away.....

Most of the templates are about giving bonuses. Of the ones in the MM for example, only the Vampire really gives any major weakness... but you would lose the vampire flavor if it didn't.

For the most part, the only balancing feature in templates is the ECL, which are a bit off for the "Half-X" races (at least in the DMG).

ECL +5 does sound better than +3 considering what the half-dragons get.
