Half elf....Half something other than human?

OK, here's my question. Why are Half-elves always of human descent? I would like to see something different, at least once.
I've always thought a half-elf, half dwarf would be interesting to see.

Um, I'd guess it is probably because they are inspired by Tolkien - he had human-elf crossbreeding, but not elf-dwarf breeding.

what he said.

Also, humans are the base race that everything else is compared to. Anything that is "half-X" is assumed that the other component is human. Something like an Elf/Dwarf would have its own racial name.

I miss Muls...

The easiest explanation would be that humans are the only race that elves can interbreed with....

Except dragons. Dragons can get it on with anything, apparently. :uhoh:

Also Celestials and Fiends.

There's a couple other half-templates out there, too.

My thoughts:
Humans can (and will probably try to) breed with any other race.
Maybe the others are a little more picky.

Elves don't like big hair so no Dwelfs. They don't like the idea of mating with children so no Helflings. They really don't like Orcs and Gnomes are just too silly.

Dwarves won't mate with anything with a smaller beard than them.
Gnomes can't find big enough boxes.
Halflings are too busy eating.

Orcs were always characterised as being hugely fecund, pretty much breeding with anything that had a pulse, like one or two people I know. OK, the tryst with the dragon probably wouldn't quite go as intended but at least they'd give it a go.

I've always seen dragons as similar to Greek Gods - they come to Earth in human/elf/swan/bull/whatever form and party hearty, then fly back to the wife and kids on the mountain feeling guilty.
