Half human... but a bit shorter.

I'd guess they would be about as tall as dwarves, but less massive. Thus they would lose the benefits halflings get for being small rather than medium creatures, but would still have a base movement of 20 ft. I guess I'd give them Favored Class-Any from their human side, or if you generally don't bother with favored class then how about the extra skill point per level. From their halfling genes, I'd give them the +1 bonus to saving throws and perhaps the +2 bonus to listen and a +1 bonus to climb, jump and move silently.

Looking at this, I'm not sure why any player would want one. Sort of like a half-elf these days.

I thought dwarves moved slower not because of their size, but because of their disproportionately stumpy legs, the resulting mix of a halfling and a human would probably either be a small creature and move at 20 ft, or a medium creature and move at 30 ft, since both races have normal proportions more or less.

I have a copy. You can borrow mine.

Cheers. Definitely sounds like an interesting one to take a peek at... can never have too many templates.

Although:

Give them +4 to ride checks, and tell your players that area is known for producing the finest jockies in the land.

Seriously i'd just use either halfling or human stats, and say they favor one side or the other.

Does sound like a pretty good lazy idea for NPCs, make something up if some madman wants to play one. And I think the jockie idea is funny, definitely worth a stealing!

Really? I didn't know that. The PHB just says their base movement is 20 ft, not why. Can you cite a source for me? Now you've got me curious, since dwarves are my second favorite race, behind humans.

i like the idea of them not being able to breed. human halfling marraiges are known as "takers" because they adopt. sometimes adopting strange mixes of creatures. lots of half orcs and half elevs being dropped at their doorsteps and all :)

Clay, that's a really cool idea. Halfling-human families would tend to be large and composed of cast-offs. My poor NPC Gupta the Ratcatcher, the goblin/halfling cross, would have been saved from a life being spit at and kicked in a nice, nurturing, wacky family like that. And maybe he would never have come to prefer grilled rat to all other foods.;)

precisely. it could split some communities and make I.D. ing the baddies harder.
:D
wondering if that is an evil, barbaric half orc or one of those cheery ones raised by halfey families adds something imho.

Thanks very much. That's a brilliant idea, consider it thieved!

It works and I'm pretty sure none of my players have seen anything like that - so got novelty value :)

Particularly like the idea of well educated and 'unconfused' half orcs and half elves. Would certainly differ from the usual stereotypes...

edit: more sense.

IMC, halflings all have Russian sounding names. So imagine a huge ugly female of a half-orc named Katinka Suzachka Zoyevna Ivanov and her frail half-elf brother Igor Ivanov.

And don't forget their goblin baby brother Pavel Ivanov.

Clay, my friend, consider this idea yoinked!

You've inspired me. Now I'm imagining a hulking half-orc bawling his eyes out crying "mama" for his 2'8" halfling mother. Heh. He certainly won't get dandled on her knee. Maybe she would have a step ladder so she could climb up to pat his head and say "There there my sweet boy." :D
