Half merfolk - should he get water breathing

I'd be interested in how a human and a merfolk manage to reproduce in the first place. (I sure hope there's some polymorphing involved!)

James Wyatt wrote an article several years ago about underwater races that described the liminals, a human/merfolk crossbreed race. You could check and see how he handled the matter of breathing. If I remember correctly, I believe Dragon #250 was the undersea adventuring issue, but I'm not at home now so I can't check.
