Half Ogre Sources?

Now I have to get that CD.
Well I don't have the CD either, but then again I've got every issue from #50 up, and half a dozen prior to that (of which #29 is one). If I remember correctly, it's actually a pretty good article, going more into the philosophy behind hybrid races than specific specs.

Sweet mini BTW!

I have played an Ogrun from Privateer Press' Lock & Load Character Primer. It is basically a half ogre :

Fav cLass: Barbarian
Skill bonuses: Intimidate & metal craft +2

+4 Str
-2 INT
-2 WIs
Size Large (8ft +)
Base speed 40
+2 nat armor
+1 HD

Level Adjustment: +1.

Analysis: maybe a tad over powered. Buts he was lots of fun to play with in the short lived gladiatorial campain. It was my first time playing a size large PC, and it definitely has advantages a canny player can exploit

here is a link to the 3.0 PC Ogrun i posted long ago in RG:

Just a bump on the off chance that someone might see my post, click on the link to the wonder that is Toluk the Ogrun's statblock, and be converted to the wonders of the Iron Kingdoms. Whatever. ;)

Not a lot of posts about which half-ogres people have played, but a lot about the ones around.

Dragon Magazine (314 most recently)
Savage Species
Monsters Handbook
Iron Kingdoms Monsternonicon (Ogrun)
Bastards & Bloodlines
Tome of Horrors
Monsters (AEG)
Ogre Lords (Upcoming Troll Lords)
Dragonlance

I'm looking at the one in Dragon as it's one of the most recent. The whole thing about getting kicked up a size and the +1 ECL isnt' too bad.

I have a player running a Savage Species Half-Ogre in my Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil game.

He is very powerful.

If I were to do it again, I would proabably change the ECL of the Half-Ogre to +2. Being large is a signigficant advantage and easily worth a +1 ECL by itself. Then adding in the stat and natural armor bonuses would give another +1 ECL.

At a measly total +1 ECL the Half-Ogre is noticeable overpowered. I'm willing to go with it though, 'cause I hate to nerf player's characters unless they are significantly upsetting the game.

Maybe I'm reading something wrong but I think the Half-ogre template in Dragon 313 (not 314) is sort of broken. If you apply it to a human for example it gets +14 to its Strength (+ 8 due to size increase and +4 racial modifier) according to the decription. So a half-human/half-ogre would be stronger than a normal ogre? Doesn't make much sense to me AND it might be overpowered for a +1 LA. If I would use it I most likely would rule that the size increase has no effect on their abilities.

In general I would like to say that the half-monster templates in dragon 313 are a good idea but should be used with caution. You get a completly different result is you apply the half-minotaur template to an ogre and if you add the half-ogre template to a minotaur.

See, that's where I disagree. (not with Diaglo, but with Laslo and Derub.)

I don't think large size is a bonus. I consider it a drawback.

I cannot determine what is in your game that makes it seem overpowered, I'm not there to question your judgement in your campaign. However, in my game, there's problems with being large sized.

Large creatures simply do not fit in most medium sized buildings. I DM a large character, and he has to be constantly -2 str due to the reduce spell that needs to be cast on him to function, and greater reach never comes into play that often. The rare times when he's full sized doesn't matter too much, since that's outside combats, which in my game usually cinsists of archery fights anyway.

Now, if you compare the half ogre to the hobgoblin, yes, there's some serious wonky balance issues there, I admit it. However, the conclusion I have come to is that hobgoblins need an ECL of +0, not to nerf half ogres.

However, that's my own personal opinion.

I agree that the SS half-ogre should have an LA of +2. Also, my preference is to give them 2 racial hit dice giving a total ECL of 4.
If you give him 2 racial giant levels, ECL +1 is ok...
