half-ogre

Yup - all the others are modifiers, but it specifically states that all Anthropomorphic Animals have their intelligence set to 11 by the template.

The Table under Anthropomorphic Characters gives a modifier for Intelligence (+0).

Thats an ECL of + 4 for the same ECL you can get an Feral Anthropomorphic Baleen Whale (3d10 Monstrous Humanoid HD, Speed 40ft, Large, Str +12 Dex +2 Con +6 Int -4 Wis +6, Natural AC +9, 2 claws 2d6, Improved Grab, Darkvision 60ft, Fast Healing 2).

I can be pretty munchkinny sometimes, but I think that being a crazy rabid anthropomorphic whale is a bit too far to go for power...

IMO if you start with an animal as your base race then your Int would be 11 but if you start with an anthropomorphic animal as your base race you could have a higher Int because your score are generated post-template rather than pre-template.

That is one of the dumbest traits I have seen in a template. So, all an anthropomorphic animals have the exact same mind?

The only other case I know of a stat being set are fiendish/celestial where inteligence is set at a minimum of 3, so all animals will have the same int after template. But that is not sentient creatures.

I think there's also a ecl +1 half ogre in the new Dragonlance campaign setting. Does anyone know if it's better balanced? Or is it the same as the savage species one?

I thought they were overpowered too until I actually played one. They're really not all that great though. A 10x10 facing kind of stinks for manuvering in combat and I draw more AO's then I should. Reach isn't a huge factor because my dex is so low it doesn't pay to take combat reflexes. Armor is 4x as expensive so I'll be wearing light armor for awhile, and most magic weapons and armor you find in a dungeon won't fit you so you need to commision instead of find your gear. The numbers seem to indicate it's overpowered, but if you actually play one it's not that different.

Doesn't magic armor resize to the size of wearer?

IMO +6 str and 10' reach with the penalties is worth more than +1 ECL. Toss in the +4 natural armor, +2 Can and darkvision and its think its really over the top.
