Halfling Whistler

I'm not seeing any spellcasting requirements for this class. Is this arcane or divine? Did I miss the requirements somewhere?

I'm glad to see this kit converted. I hope it is one among many from all the Complete series.

As for the Complete Bard's Handbook, it was great. :)

There's no spellcasting requirement...which isn't nessecarily a bad thing, but it does raise the question of "wasted abilities" for those who don't have it already. Still, it's a nice little halfling bard/druid fusion, so most who take it probably will be.

I'm a bit disappointed he didn't use all the tools at his disposal. It's a nice little conversion, but I don't think he took it far enough -- after all, the Stormwhistle doesn't use Bardic Music uses, for instance. Though I think the "A Friend In Need" ability is the first I've seen that may work at a 1/wk casting....though I don't like it, since it lasts for days, it might be fine. Though I dread the High-Wisdom, Week-Long Giant Animal Hoarde * 2 that is my first idea upon reading it. :)

I also love the Bard's Handbook, i have had fun playing the thespian, and the jonguleur. The halfling whistler was interesting, since instead of learning spells(they can't cast mage spells), they learned the counter spells, and as they gained levels they got the ability to use certain spells of the weather variety once a day, the chattering was basically the same. Thats all i can remember about it.

Argh, my brain is breaking: Is there a gnome bard kit in there or was it in Complete Gnomes & Halflings?

Cheer up my good dwarf ... not everyone can be at 100% ALL the time! :)

That said, I'm with Glyfair in that I skipped the 2e for the most part. I tried it a few times and it just didn't fly for me. Ah well....

I like the update, overall. Seems true enough to the original while still being playable.

And count me in as someone waiting to see a Gallant update, though if I don't see one by the time my group starts our next campaign I may have to set one up myself.

True or False?

Well, I happen to know that the author did poll some players for their favorites, and this was the first one mentioned. By none other than Colonel Hardisson (an old hand at ENWorld, even if we don't see him round these parts much these days.)

The bard and paladin books were nice in that they had a better design philosophy than the earlier books -- kits were more like "variant classes" that traded abilities for other abilities, rather than trading it for disads that often didn't mean much.

All I remember from the complete Bard was one of my players buying it and that's all he'd play. He played 3 bards in three adventures (they all died due to gross stupidity near the end of every adventure)

So that sorta soured it for me.

But I did like those complete handbooks quite a bit (Paladin & Elves were my personal favourites at the time)

Dunno what happened to them though. We all had our round at a friends place back when we all were in school and lived at home.

Moving out and their mother cleaning meant that those books were never heard from again…

We lost Auroura’s WRG that way too. If only I’d known that we’d still be playing now.

The Horror, the horror the horror.
