Microsoft has put the finishing touches on a deal to hire Alex Garland (28 Days Later, The Beach) to adapt the bestselling video game franchise into one movie, reports Variety. The trade says Garland's screenplay will then be offered to studios as a complete "turnkey" script and rights package.

The "Halo" franchise is one of the most popular in video game history, having sold over 12.8 million units and grossed approximately $600 million since its 2001 debut. Last year, "Halo 2" sold 6.4 million copies and was the second-bestselling game of the year.

I'm totally stoked to hear that there will be a movie, but at the same time I'm very very afraid that it will be as crappy as all the other videogame movies out there - particularly if Bungie won't be very involved in developing the script and story...

I wish this sort of thing would just stop.

I love these games, but I think a Halo movie sounds like a very bad idea.

Now all I have to do is convince the world to stop spending their hard-earned money validating video-game movies.

Sure. No prob.

I'm looking forward to this. I think a HALO movie could be great popcorn entertainment. Whether it is or not, of course, remains to be seen.

There's no reason why a video game movie has to be bad. I'm cautiously optimistic.

I agree -- there's no reason they have to be bad.

Maybe Halo will be the first video game movie that's actually good. But I can't help but feel (and maybe I'm too pessimistic) that there's no place for a Halo movie. I've played the games, and they rock, and I can't wait for the next one. So what do I need a movie for?

Obviously I don't have to see it, and no one needs a movie, but it seems to me that the fun of the Halo experience isn't made more complete with the addition of a movie.

A movie that isn't even out yet. Which I haven't seen.

I've really talked myself into a corner on this one, haven't I. :uhoh: ;)

Never mind. Enjoy the film, folks!

I take it you fellows haven't read the three Halo novels?

They were done by two different authors. The first The Fall of Reach goes into detail about John (aka. Spartan 117, aka. Master Cheif) and his training. It's is the origin story of the Spartan Project, its members, their training, and describes first contact with the Covenant. Despite the fact that it is a "video game book", it was VERY well written. It's one of my favorite books in fact. Eric Nylund did a very good job with the Halo license.

The second book, The Flood ...sucked. It was by another, very poor, author and was essentially the novelization of the first game. I read a few chaptors and couldn't look passed the terrible writing. Besides, I had played the game, and thus knew the story. I never finished it.

The third book, First Strike was also written by Nylund, who once again did a wonderful job. It covers the time period between the two video games and is very entertaining and suspenseful.

After reading the books, I can see a LOT of movie potential, especially if they make the movie based on The Fall of Reach.

From what I read so far, they plan to combine everything...into one movie. Sound like all the novel stuff will be included.

Then if that is so...I am looking forward to a near 3 hour movie:D...if they do it in two...well...let me shut my mouth.
