It was originally known as Armistice Day in honor of the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, at 1111 hrs on 11 Nov 1918. The reasoning was so that it would be easy to remember for all of the parties involved because the ceasefire started at the same time. That way no one would shoot after the allotted time. It almost worked too; only a handful of people were killed after the treaty was signed.
