Harry Potter and the Order of the Gutter

My wife and I read the Order of the Phoenix aloud to one another, and it was great fun: the book is full of snappy lines, comical characters, and great action sequences.

It's also chock full of double entendres, so many that I'm convinced JK Rowling has a very dirty mind.

This thread on the IMDB Message Board has a compilation of these double-entendres. Three warnings: there's a bit of profanity on the page, there's a lot of spoilers, and if you're not already seeing Harry Potter as a pervy little teenager, you're forever going to see him that way after checking the page out.

An example (discussing a magical room that occasionally appears at Hogwarts; Dobby is an elf, and Winky is his paramour):

"...when it appears, it is always equipped for the seeker's needs. Dobby has used it, sir," said the elf, dropping his voice and looking guilty, "when Winky has been very drunk." (387)

I don't think that JK Rowling meant it like that. Maybe its YOU who has the dirty mind.

Given! :D

But honestly, there's just so many double entendres in the book, it's difficult to believe it's all unintentional. Especially when you're writing about a fifteen-year-old boy: I suspect that the double-entendres were the only way she could get her publishers to let her include the single most important subject to a fifteen-year-old boy.

Oh that is just SO funny. I had noticed a few of those here and there. I think some of them are intentional...I think Rowling likes to push the envelope a tad.
Just like I think there are some subtle gay insinuations between harry and ron. (or maybe its just wishful thinking on my part :-)

I think its just wishful thinking on your part too. Ever since the fourth book I made a bet with my friend that Ron and Hermione get together later on. I don't know about Harry though, Cho can sometimes be an embarrasment to women everywhere. What kind of girl breaks out into tears and starts sobbing about her dead boyfriend to the guy she is out with who just happens to be the only witness to his death. *inhales*:o So I don't think that they are going to happen. Who knows, Harry might even die. But out of curiosity, (and my own sick, sad mind) what subtle gay insinuations do you mean?

I'm pretty sure Hermione and Ron are going to hook up later, too. Harry and Ron never piqued my gaydar, though. Sirius and Lupin, on the other hand...

If Harry himself were reading this, would he pick up on all these little comments.

I like this one best:
"Panting, Harry fell forwards over the hydrangea bush, straightened up and stared around. There were several faces peering trough various nearby windows. Harry stuffed his wand hastily back into his jeans and tried to look innocent."
Huh? "Double Entendre"? Nah, It just couldn't be!

NNNOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! Not Sirius!!!! Just kidding. Although, I have to admit, you may have a point there.
And the reason the fourth book made me think that Hermione and Ron were gonna hook up was at the Yule Ball, when Hermione showed up with Victor Krum. Ron got angry supposedly because she was "fraternizing with the enemy" as he called it, but I think that he was jealous.

here's one that cought my eye

page 665 UK edition

"Harry grabbed Hermione and pulled her to the ground; face down on the forest floor...."

without reading the rest, you could get some very intresting thoughts from that sentence alone :D
