There is a GURPS Diskworld and an expansion called Diskworld Also.

Even if you don't play GURPS it comes with a Lite Version of the Rules in the main book.

It shouldn't be too hard to convert and all the juicy culture stuff is there.

I kind of like the idea of an adventurers academy game for D&D. Imagine a four year "prep" school that when the players graduate they will have reached thrird level or so.

Iwas thinking of giving the players X# of EP for attending school and the first few adventures increasing the rate of EP gain to represent putting academic lessons into practice.

Player1. "Wow, its a Bugbear, what do we do."

Player2 "Just like in class and watch out for spells"

Another option might be a special "prestige" varient class. Academy wizards would be like Wizards with special abilities in to represent the better training they recieve over hedge mages.

You could do the same with the pther classes as well as long as you don't mix regualr and improved classes.
 

I wrote up some rules. It'll be another one of those things that nobody likes just like the other things I submit, but I'll try anway. I want to finish the rules on Quidich before I post everything though.

Long before anyone ever heard of Harry Potter there was a D&D (as in, Original Dungeons & Dragons) setting called Mystara. Back before it was even known as Mystara, when it was simply The Known World, a Gazetteer was published, a certain GAZ 3: The Principalities of Glantri, by Bruce Heard (published in 1987). Glantri was a magocracy, a nation run by and for magic-users.

The heart of Glantrian society was the Great School of MAgic, where those with the talent (and some, well, with less talent than some) learned the ways of magic. Students began at an early age, 12 to 16, at 1st level and graduated when they reached 9th level. In between they would have all sorts of adventures and misadventures, including duels. The Grand Master of the school was Prince Etienne d'Ambreville (Stephen Amber, from the old Castle Amber adventure), a figure not unlike Dumbledore (though admittedly, Dumbledore and Etienne are both not unlike the typical portrayal of wizards after all).

In Glantri anyone that graduates can return to the school for extra studies or to browse the library (for a fee, of course).

Here's the info on the original GAZ 3:

GAZ 3 The Principalities of Glantri, by Bruce Heard, 1987, TSR9208, ISBN 0-88038-485-9. Original cost: $8.95. Currently sells for no less than $20 to $30 or more on eBay and at auctions; one of the most sought-after Gazetteers.

Most of the material was republished later in the abortive attempt to adapt Mystara to AD&D 2E, in the following boxed set:

Glantri: Kingdom of Magic, by Monte Cook and Bruce A. Heard, 1995, TSR2511, ISBN 0-7869-0120-9. Original cost: $30.00. Usually available for far less on sale at many shops, sometimes can be found at discount toy shops (like KayBee) for as low as $3.00.

Let's watch how hard we put down Potter.

Are we putting him down because we've read the books and really dislike them or because it is a knee-jerk reaction to something really popular.

How many kids are reading because of Potter? how many kids will wander into our local hobby stores, hoping to play a wizard because of those very books. That can't be a bad thing.

Thank you all for your input. To those of you who hate Harry Potter, fair enough. I personally enjoyed the books.

I did not mean to imply I am running a Magic School, or a Potter campaign (though I am interested in the idea). I am running a game based on an "adventuring" school, which includes all of the basic D&D classes.

The players all started as first years at Mistwell University.

So far they accidently released the Dean's pet cockatrice, followed the pet down into the third year's training caves, where they encountered various riddles and traps (much of which was adapted from Gorgoland's Gauntlet from Dragon Annual 5) and eventually capturing the cockatrice and returning it.

Because they left evidence of their illegal entry into the training caves, they were punished and sent on detention. The first weekend they were sent to retrieve some herbs, and place an order for an upcoming spring festival, with a graduate of the school. There, they went through the Calzone Golem short adventure off the WOTC site, and had a couple of other short side adeventures from EnWorld's mini-encounter contest.

Next weekend of detention they were informed the school had receive a house as a gift in a will of a former student who died, and were sent to board up the house, inventory it's contents, and return with any portable items. The house was haunted, taken from a prior contest at EnWorld based on the WOTC site haunted mansion map (the soulscape painting entry).

I'm looking for ideas for future shorter adventures, though I have a major adventure in the works for the hapless students soon. Duels are a good idea, as are tests, and the festival offers some possibilities.

The thread title is kinda misleading. :)

IMHO, having a scholastic setting is an OK idea....nothin' wrong with it at all, and it would especially appeal to the high school/jr. high/college players, and may be able to recruit youngers. Don't really see how it has to be much different than a normal D&D campaign, though. It's just that when you "gain a level," you complete some studies, and BING, you're a graduate.

So, it's cool.

As for the HP campaign....I probably know at least three players that would love such a thing, and I don't mind mining it for ideas, so publish what ya can! Even if it's just a rip-off "Adventuring U." or something, it's still useful, if inspired by HP.

Thanks James, you beat me to it! I too would heartily recommend the Great School of Magic as a setting... if you can find a copy. I DM a long-running campaign set at the school, although the PC has long since graduated and is now a professor.

Easier to find, although not up to the same quality IMHO is the 2ed accessory "College of Wizardry" by Bruce Cordell (1997). It does have some atmospheric material with the student PCs cutting class, sneaking into out-of-bounds areas, and discovering secrets and places they shouldn't know about.
