Harry Potter RPG?

First Post
I remember there being quite a bit of discussion on the boards in the past about the possibility of a Harry Potter rpg. Apparently JK Rowling would not authorize any company to produce a rpg based on Harry Potter because to produce an effective game, she would have to reveal many of the plot elements and secrets of the novels that were yet to be released. However, last night saw the release of the last Harry Potter novel. Now that the series is finished, do you think that JK Rowling will agree to the production of a Harry Potter themed rpg? I think that it would be a wonderful idea and a great way to attract younger gamers to the hobby.

I agree. A Harry Potter RPG would be a fantastic way to get kids into RPGs. Can you imagine how many libraries we could get to participate and have Harry Potter RPG game nights/afternoons?

I'm working on a coversion of the Star Wars SAGA rules to use, and played in a True20 version in a pickup game at GenCon last year. Official? No. JKR doesn't like the idea of a game where the story isn't predetermined (ie. she likes Candy Land, but not minis games and RPGs).

Mike Selinker (along with Teeuwynn Woodruff, I believe, and a few other folks) were on the WotC team to develop the first Harry Potter rpg. I seem to recall that Rowling was exceptionally reluctant to relinguish any sort of creative control whatsoever. For instance, she didn't want players to be able to become any of the main characters.

I admit to some interest as to whether this has changed now that the last book is out.

Out of curiosity - do Harry Potter board games exist?

I imagine in the grand scale of things, an RPG is pretty small fry in her mind. She's used to dealing with movie studios.

Several... mostly DVD quiz games hough... nothing specific to the Harry potter world To the best of my knowledge....

because to produce an effective game, she would have to reveal many of the plot elements and secrets of the novels that were yet to be released.

My inner skeptic cannot help but translate this phrase thus:

"I cannot be bothered."

Honestly... that line is not a decent argument... else no one would have ever seen a Marvel/DC universe game.

I would think a Harry Potter game could exist fairly well without the use of the main characters. In the grand scheme of things we have only been introduced to such a small portion of the Wizarding world, Britain being chief among it all. Mention of wizarding schools throughout the world could come into play, such as Beaubaton and Durmstrang and countless others. I'm sure Wizards in other areas of the world have very different problems to deal with than Voldemort. I easily see this RPG as feasibly possible.

Yeah, but as long as we're talking about kids, lets face it...they're gonna want to be Harry and Ron and Hermione and Ginny et al...not a gaggle of nobodies from Durmstrang. :)

Not that I think that's a bad thing, and it's puzzling Rowling would use it as an argument against an RPG...since kids are already most assuredly gleefully assuming those roles at this very moment, dressed in improvised costumes and waving sticks around.

This would just be a formalization of the games kids play anyway.

*shrug*

Addenda - And, of course, the more seasoned roleplayers would probably love to see those other aspects of the HP world elaborated upon.

Based on the way magic is portrayed in the Potter movies (never read the books), it seems to work like the Force in Star Wars Saga, i.e. the higher you roll your Use the Force (or Cast Spell, as the case may be), the better the outcome (which is why some patronus are more powerful than others, etc).
