Harry Potter RPG?

Yeah, but as long as we're talking about kids, lets face it...they're gonna want to be Harry and Ron and Hermione and Ginny et al...not a gaggle of nobodies from Durmstrang. :)

Dont visit the fanfiction areas much huh? ;)

90+% of those are kids wanting to be Harry's/Malfoy's/Daniel Radcliffe's/That lad who plays Malfoy's Girlfriend/Boyfriend....

Anyhow.. if Buffy can do it I don't see why Hogwarts cant.

Addenda - And, of course, the more seasoned roleplayers would probably love to see those other aspects of the HP world elaborated upon.

I completely see your point and agree with it to an extent, but let's not kid ourselves. We don't care about anyone but the seasoned roleplayer! :D

Were I a young potter fan, I'd be more enticed to become the next Harry Potter instead of pretending to be Harry Potter.

JK Rowling

Mike Selinker (along with Teeuwynn Woodruff, I believe, and a few other folks) were on the WotC team to develop the first Harry Potter rpg. I seem to recall that Rowling was exceptionally reluctant to relinguish any sort of creative control whatsoever. For instance, she didn't want players to be able to become any of the main characters.

I admit to some interest as to whether this has changed now that the last book is out.

My guess is that you won't see any sort of Harry Potter RPG. As I understand it, JK Rowling does NOT like the idea of people playing "her" characters nor does she want to give others control over "her" world.

I happen to know that a number of people have tried to get a license for this as most feel this would be an ideal way to introduce children to RPGs. Even a Potter RPG would not have enough sales to enable a company to offer a woman reported to have made a billion dollars (US) enough money to change her mind. I have also heard that appeals to help get more kids involved in RPGs to improve the "use of their own imagination and creativity" were, um, not received well.

There are some HP board games out there, nothing that is much more than a take off of an old game with an added HP theme. Those don't interfere with her characters/world.

Maybe after the last book she'll mellow out on these topics, but stories I have heard (which might have grown in the telling) indicate it is unlikely. I guess that means someone has until the release of the 7th movie to convince her to allow an RPG.

Someone should tell her about all the video games, then.

I think her objections to an RPG have been distorted over the years.

Wow, I type slowly, several response while I was trying to post the last response (the crying baby did slow me down ...).

The video games I have seen are pretty much locked down as far as what you can do, they aren't open game worlds or anything. But that is an aside, I have heard she hasn't been that happy with those either. Now, I am sure they make much more money than an RPG would, but really, by this point, money doesn't impress her.

Apparently, she has real problems with control over her characters and "world." Video games, not so big a deal I guess, but books written by other authors and used by other people to "create" changes to HER world are rumored to be a very big deal to her.

Like I said above, some stories might have grown in the telling, but several of the people have talked to about the JK/RPG thing are pretty reliable and have directly discussed it with her.

*quiet point*

The videogames stem off the movies not the books...

the big WB shield is on them all.

Psh.

Get Redhurst.

Call it a day.

Move on.

"Schools of Witchcraft and Wizardry" are hardly copyrighted by Rowling, and it's easy enough to crib the cool ideas, make it slightly different, and run headlong with it. :)
