Mongoose doing an H.P. game? Well, it is a Brittish RPG company I believe.

But didn't J.K. says RPGs lead kids into Satanism? ;)
Cant say I've herd that quote from her...

If she did say it though it'd be hilarious, considering the amount of fanatics who say Harry Potter does the same thing!

Well... there is still hope... I think that Harry Potter RPG is really one of the great opportunities to improve the image of the industry, bring new players and hopefully more girls, which would than open opportunities for yet another games and so on. Like avalanche.

The videogames stem off the movies not the books...

the big WB shield is on them all.
Plus the games follow the movies' story pretty closely, and you can't do nothing else with them.

A Harry Potter RPG would need to be a fully fleshed campaign world, with secrets revealed to the GM, and Rowling may want to keep secrets to herself in case she wants to return to those characters.

But can she top the Harry Potter series with a new series based on that world and most likely different main character?

And no, the new character shouldn't be Harry Potter's child or descendant. We already got plenty of that in the fiction shelf.

She has the entire wizarding world outside of the UK yet to explore in more than a cursory manner. Surely she can do something with it if she's not willing to let others.

Well, she could "pull a Lucas" and show everything leading up to the murder of the Potters and Voldemort's original death.

She manages to give all the relevant scenes through flashbacks and the Pensieve. Unlike Lucas, who didn't even have Darth Vader as Luke's father until the second draft of "The Empire Strikes Back," the backstory was always tied closely to the storyline.

Quite so. But I doubt it would do as well.

There are a number of reasons why Potter is the best seller it is. There are engaging characters, of course, and while Rowling is merely a competent writer, she is a very good story teller.

But above all, why the Potter books are pure gold is because they have within them the seed that sets all great fantasy apart from the masses: the desperate wish that the world the author conceives could be true.

The entire idea of boarding school in a castle of Wizardry existing alongside our real world is pure gold; that's the premise upon which Rowling made a billion dollars. It is an utterly brilliant concept. True - she was a good enough author to make it all work - but I think there are hundreds of other authors who could have done that.

What made it all so brilliant and tied it together was the central premise of Hogwarts. And that's all hers.

So while the Wizarding World is enchanting, what makes it sell more $$ worth of novels in a day than the biggest blockbuster can do in a weekend is the premise of Eton meets Merlin. If we come back to this world someday - then Hogwarts has to have a place in it.
