Has anyone created a creature list including those in Dungeon magazines and other sources?

WotC did, it's called the Compendium.

With MM, there were 488, now there are 2134 of them (including everything from published adventures and RPGA modules), and growing at a rate of about 150 pets per month. I'm sure no one wants to keep up with that, when WotC is already doing it with Compendium.

To be absolutely clear, unless you pay money, you're not likely to see lists and compilations like you used to.

Most people passionate enough about the game to start initiatives like these are also people who subscribe to DDI.

Which leaves people like you in the dust. DDI simply means that a lot of things that used to be free now comes at a cost; increasing the cost of being a D&D gamer.

Which of course is WotC's goal all along.

Does DDI include an index by type or locale? If I'm plotting an adventure in the Feywild, I have to search really hard through the MM to find all the Fey monsters. It's even harder if it's an adventure in the Underdark, since there's no unifying keyword for monsters likely to be found there -- I actually have to read the fluff.

Well, you can search for "fey", which will get you all the monsters with that keyword in the statblock (there's 186 of them). That should be enough for a Feywild adventure, although you might miss some monsters that live there but don't have that specific keyword.

also, in response to the OP. you are in luck because I had a similar question a while back and someone promptly answered me. There is something called the Core Lists where they try to assign things like terrain keywords to 4e monsters. Hope this helps: http://corelists.blogspot.com/

Haven't we seen layoffs, etc in the last 6 months? That doesn't happen if the money is flowing...

But hey, I'm cool with WotC succeeding. I like the game they publish.
