I started playing when I was eight (back in '82). No one every said anything to me about it then, though my parents did mention they would never spend their money on that stuff as gifts for me (looking back, they've spent my whole life asking what I want for Christmas/Birthday and then telling me "We're not buying that for you).
When I moved to Germany in '85, I played off and on whenever I could and even had a substitute teacher who played. No one ever dirided us for it. In fact, since all of my friends Dad's were in the military, a few of them played too. But, there were a couple of kids who weren't allowed to play 'cause their parents thought it was evil. On kid's parents even confiscated his Dragonlance boardgame (remember THAT?). I also knew a kid whose parents wouldn't let him play D&D, but he could play other RPGs (Star Wars D6, or even the Ultima games on his PC).
When I moved to Virginia in '90 my father did ask once didn't I think I was too old for a "kid's game?" I told him in one of those This-Discussion-Is-Over tones, "No." My sister told me once during the same period that I shouldn't play D&D 'cause it was "bad." I told her once I know some Wiccans and she told me that that was "bad." (What? Just knowing them? Geez, I didn't realize it was offensive for someone to tell me that they're Wiccans). Of course, she's a Christian Fundamentalist. She tried to get me to go to a Bible Study class once and tried to guilt-trip me when I said I was too busy "You don't have time for your God???"
Ok, better stop before I get on a rant on how religion has drawn her away from honoring her mother and her father. I checked the "Yes, for religious..." choice because of her. Granted, the attempts on my gaming life are fairly tame compared to some I've read here. But, they were enough to make me very cautious about with whom I would talk D&D matters. I did make a point to tell every woman I dated about whom I was serious though; I'll be <explitive deleted> if I'm going to let someone tell me who my friends can and cannot be.
