Has anyone used BoEM2's bard variant?

Well, I kinda like the concept. He has more firepower with songstrike at lvl1 than your average sorcerer.

Take the Amplify Song feat at all costs.

I've used it.

I started a PHB bard and wasn't very excited about it. He seemed underpowered with no hope in sight.

So I convered him to a Monte Bard. Honestly it's not much better. More skill points, but the songs are weak.

The real problem IMHO with the Monte bard is that you end up being cut off from all other material. Epic progressions, splatbooks, etc. - none of it works because you're different now and not a typical arcane caster. I see this as a problem. Frankly I'd suggest borrowing a few elements maybe, but wait for 3.5 to see what they do to the bard.

Two further problems with monte's bard that we've seen with the one in our group.

1. Magic items bard's could normally use (with spells from the PH spell list) aren't usable....you'd have to introduce special items suitable for their special way of spellcasting.

2. The bard has versatility early on, and seems substantially underpowered later. You're basically stuck with lvl 1 powers for quite a while, and being able to heal d6 hit points at lvl 5 isn't so great anymore.

Other than those factors, and the one mentioned above (cut off from other source materials), I like the concept of how they cast spells.

I have to admit that I don't usually play in the high level camp... but it shouldn't be a problem for a DM who allows that class to allow some other changes as well... e.g. simply allow this bard to use all the stuff the PHB bard may use?
Epic progression.... TEAMING I QUIT!
