I buy all the books.

Compendium? I have a {unmentioned source of} PDFs for each of the books on the day they come out - I still buy every one. And not discounted on Amazon either, but from my FLGS.

Yes, but in the opposite way: it provides helpful previews for books I don't yet have and increases my confidence to buy those that look useful.

Zaukrie (or anyone), did you find the definitions for the Invigorating or Rattling keywords in the Compendium?

I said yes. It has prevented me from spending ANY money on 4th edition outside of the PHB. Had the game been good enough I might have been tempted to look for a DDI subscription.

Had the Compendium been for an edition I player, then odds are I would have been less likely to buy so many books as the Compendium would hold most things I would ever need from the books anyway.

No, defintions are not there, as far as I know. That said, I believe they indicated in a thread on Gleemax that they were working on adding things like that. However, who knows what is going on with DDI now that they laid off so many from the digital area.

So, that is a weakness. And, I do like to hold books. But, I'd really like to go to Peru in 18 months or so, and so I'm trying (somewhat unsuccessfully) to cut out "unneeded" expenses across the board.

Nope. Went into 4e set on not getting stuck in the supplement trap of previous editions. The compendium makes that even easier, if I really want to use something crunchy from a supplement, I can, but I haven't really yet, other than a feat from Dragon.

I am getting the "DM" books, though. Even though the crunch from them will make it to the compendium, that's not the whole reason why I want them.

I think the compendium:

-allows me to use marginal material I normally wouldn't (since I wouldn' buy the book)
-gives me "previews" that may make me more likely to buy a book
-doesn't stop me from getting something I really want any ways.
