It is a fantasy series by Ursula K. LeGuin, made into a movie by Sci Fi channel. The setting is a vast archipeligo where magic performed through the use of truenames.

Okay, I think I've heard that now. Haven't seen the movie though. Sounds like an interesting setting.

It is an interesting setting and series of books.

Just...don't watch the movie. It makes all kinds of unnecessary (and often bad) changes.

If, for some reason, you must see the Sci-Fi Channel version, see it first.

I think I heard of the Wild Cards supplement. I'm a fan of GURPS, so I may have come across it. Not too familiar with M&M though I've looked at a couple of times.

Wild Cards is the oldest shared setting going. They started in 1987 and released the 19th book in the series this year. There is a 20th that will be published soon and the deal has been signed for the 21st in the series.

It's a gritty superheroes type of thing. The start was an alien virus being released over the Bowery in New York City on September 15, 1946. OF those infected, 90% die horrible deaths. Of the survivors, 90% are horribly deformed. The remaining 10% of the survivors gain some power. Super strength, telekinesis, telepathy, etc. are some examples.

The virus rewrites genetic code. The resulting genetic code is recessive. So the potential of mutation in offspring is 100% if two infected people breed. If one wild card and one "nat"(natural uninfected person) breed, all offspring are carriers.

Anyway, it's a great setting, great novels and loads of fun.

I played in my first Wild Card campaign setting back in the early 1990s.

Its a very rich setting, easily the equal of any comic book universe...and the stories are usually better written.

Shortly after d20 Modern was released, I used Stephen King's Dark Tower as a multiverse. The first session involved the PCs meeting at a job interview at the Tet Corporation in New York. My plan was to have the game start out as corporate espionage and exploration of strange occurrences. Unfortunately, the group fell apart after three sessions.

I loosely tried Stephen King's Dark tower series as well. Mine took place after the fall of Gilead though, in a world that was being 'run down' where civilization was dying out. Campaign didn't last though

If you are going to see that movie, take my advice, don't. The books are much better, the Sci Fi movie is really dull and uninspired.

The son of Japanesse animator Miyazaki released in 2006 a better version, "Tales from Earthsea" (Gendo Seki). It's a little slow for most people but is better showing the unique feeling of this setting.

Okay, I'll see if I can try to find that.
