Have you given your kids fantasy names?

My parents had an acquaintance who named his son, no joke, "Castle Danger".

What, "Siege Perilous" sounded too froo-froo?

Some friends from years back named their son "Thor Aikenhed". I probably spelt it wrong and I should state that they were immagrants from Norway or Sweden or thereabouts. Maybe someone from there can tell me if thats a common name. In North America it sounds like "Sore aching head". They probably don't even play D&D.

Tor is an amazingly common name here in Norway. I've got about ten or twelve names in my cellphones' contact list that's either Tor or starting with Tor (Torbjørn, Torgeir etc.).

I've also met a few folks named Odin or Loke (Loki), and I've heard of people named Balder, but, unlike Tor, they're not regarded as just another common name.

It probably helps that we associate the names with our very own mythological figures and not a superhero comic

My son is called Connor after the lead character from Highlander (my favourite film). If you add in the fact that our surname is McAlister he'll be able to misquote the film, My name is Connor McAlister, of the Clan McAlister. I was born in 2002 in the city of Gloucester on the shores of the River Severn. And I am not immortal.

My best friend in high school way back in the 70s was a twin her name was Zeborah Anne Zebi for short her sister who was born first was named Deborah Sue.

The worse part of it for her was having it misprodunced its Deborah with a Z but a lot of teachers would call out Za Bora ah so she thought if she changed the spelling to Zebra (like Debra) it would be easier.

It took her awhile to understand the gales of laughter coming from her friends.

In the end now that she is nearing 50 she loves her name and that fact that no one else has it.

I don't think unsual names are bad as long as they are too unsual like Moxie Crimefighter or Pilot Inspektor.

If I had ever had a daughter I was going to name her Brekke Elizabeth. Brekke after a character in Anne McCaffrey Dragonriders of Pern. I was going to name my son Vincent Michael after his godfather but the nurses started calling him Vinnie and I cringed and switched it around so Michael was his first name and I never allowed him to be called Mikey or Mike to this day he is Micahael I hate nicknames I don't understand them why name your child Rebecca if you are going to call her Becky or even weirder Maragret and call her Peggy. :\

For myself I am glad my dad put his foot down when my mom wanted to go on a theme and name me Pearl Angel because I was born on December 7 so Pearl for Pearl Harbor and Angel for Christmas Angel. Instead I got named Carol after a christmas carols.

But the deal's an easy one: You pick their name, they pick your retirement home.

No kids, but my sister's BF had a name change a little while ago when his parents got divorced and he wanted to take his mother's maiden name (at least, I think that's how the story goes) and while he was filling out the form he decided to change his middle name legally to "Diablo".

I feel like giving a kid a strange first name is just cruel, but a strange middle name is acceptable. If they don't like it they can keep it secret, but if they like it a lot they can always choose to drop their first name and go by their middle name. I know a few people who go by their middle names.

While I must say that in general, I think giving children really ridiculous sounding names is deplorable, just like everything else, it is not an exact science. I mean, a name like Eowyn or Arwen is probably going to raise a few eyebrows, but at the end of the day, they are not really that complex, and they do sound nice. Luthien Tinuviel, not quite so much.

Personally, if I ever have any kids, common Celtic and French names for girls, and common Celtic names for boys is probably the way I would go. Assuming of course I could be convincing. I will be prepared for a titanic clash of titans though! hehehe...
