despite the trailers, it is fairly decent and not a bad watch if you have nothing else on and can spare the cash in these expensive days
saw it last night. I can go into spoilers if you want

I enjoyed it when I saw it. I saw it some weeks ago with grandkids. One of them knows everything there is to know about the Transformers universe and was informing me of what was right, what was wrong, what differed, what didn't, what was associated with the American version vs. the Japanese version (yes, did you know that apparently there was a split for at least a little while where the Americans and Japanese had two different series that were separate in their chronologies and events?).

I don't know enough to say what is where regarding Transformers, but I have several people close to me that are pretty expert on these matters.

They seemed to enjoy it as well. I've mostly seen the movies, and of the movies I'd say this was my second favorite of them (favorite being Bumblebee).

I will update the tag if anyone asks for spoilers do not worry.

it is certainly better than most of what it is competing with for cinema space right now

I don't go to theaters anymore, but I'm a big Transformers fan so I'll get around to seeing this eventually. It's nice to hear some positive reactions. Transformers movies are a pretty mixed bag, I've always got my fingers crossed when one comes out.

It's a bit odd of your friend to say the movie does some things "right or wrong" when it comes to story. Unlike other big media brands, Transformers doesn't really do continuity*. Every new show, comic, game, or movie is it's own thing unless it says otherwise, and I thought this movie was unconnected to previous works. Riffing off similar ideas probably, but not in continuity with anything. It's one of the things I like about the brand really, there's room to be really creative when a new thing comes out. Maybe there is just a bit of telephone game going on here.

*there were two times the brand tried to have an actual continuity. The first was the Japanese generation 1 timeline, which tied together all Transformers media up to I think the Cybertron show. Most of these shows were not originally meant to be in continuity, and as a result the Japanese G1 continuity is a bit of a mess. Thankfully, Takara stopped trying this a long time ago. The second was touted as a grand unification and ongoing continuity project that was going to start with the War for Cybertron game and the Prime t.v. show. I've forgotten what it was called, because it fell apart almost immediately.

It is not bad for a kids movie. It does the job of making a "cool robot" movie for kids to like.

A lot of it is typical of most kids movies. The characters act and talk like five year olds. There is lots of mindless action. All the characters "fall off a mountain" or "bounce around like balls" more then once. There is a lot of assault, even more so by the female transformer.

The basic story is okay, but it gets lost behind all the wacky kids stuff.

And, of course, it has robots that 12 million years ago?....transform in to Earth like looking vehicles.

It is a great movie for kids.

Assuming you mean Transformers One, it seems to be very much in its own continuity (like every other Transformers thing) and is actually pretty good. It starts with Orion Pax and D-16 as best friends and watch them develop into Optimus Prime and Megatron (that isn’t a spoiler, it’s pretty obvious from the trailer), and honestly it does that story pretty well.
