I play, DM, and write modules for Living Greyhawk.

I play in a casual home game, but I'd say that I play 30 hours of RPGA for every 1 hour of home play in a given year.

I've never seen the attraction of playing in the RPGA, even if I played a standard D&D game (which I don't). Why should someone else be judging me and my players for some measly pat on the head? Also, I haven't heard of any truly great adventures coming out of the RPGA. Are there any?

I passed the Herald level test to get my RPGA membership, but have never gotten to use it as either a judge or player. If there was an RPGA event in my town I'd be eager to give RPGA events a try, but so far I haven't been bothered to try to organize anything or drive two hours to one of the nearby towns that does have RPGA events.

It's quite possible to run a game at home - indeed, I'm sure that's how a lot of RPGA play occurs. I just have my regular group getting together, I know I'm running an adventure from Dungeon magazine, and I just tell the RPGA that I'm doing so. :)

Cheers!

In 2001-2, I tried again with the Living Greyhawk campaign, and found the organization improved. But then I went a few months between conventions, and in that time the rules changed, my certs were invalid, my character was not up to standards, etc. So the appeal of an ongoing campaign was thwarted. I dutifully updated my character and tried again, again went a few months without attending a convention, and AGAIN, my character was invalid.

I think that the attraction of any campaign, RPGA Living or home-grown, is continuity. The Living Greyhawk campaign did not provide that, and as a result I no longer participate in any RPGA activities. Further, to be successful, such campaigns must provide for players like myself who aren't able to participate frequently.

Invalid character? Wha-? I've played Living Greyhawk since year 2 of the campaign, and the only possible way that could have happened is if you were a member of one of the classes that changed completely when 3.5 went through. Otherwise, your organisers or triad screwed you over royally.

I play in RPGA games almost weekly. Living Force, Arcanis, Greyhawk, I love them all. Spring Revel Downunder rocked the house completely.

I've run or played between 320 and 350 games for the RPGA over the last 14 years, snagging the best judge trophy for a couple of years straight at GenCon. I've run very few games in the last few years, though; they alienated me when they gutted "Classic" events by removing pre-gen character personalities and interactions. That's my first love, as I don't enjoy "Living" games as much, and I'm sure I'll return to the fold if they go back to the previous model of "Classic" modules.

I end up playing when I'm at home (on vacation from school), because that's what my friends and family do, and it's a lot easier to get into a game than to try to set up an ongoing campaign. I can just check and see who's playing what and show up, so it's divided into bite-size chunks rather than having to deal with continuity. It's also nice to get a chance to travel and play with new people. I'm willing to play LG or most of the other campaigns when that's what's going on and I don't have anything else that I'm doing, and I will actually go out of my way to play Living Arcanis, because I really like the stories (although they tend to be a bit clueless about game mechanics at times.)

That said, however, I have a lot more fun with my weekly home campaign that I run during the school year.

I played Living Greyhawk a couple of months back, and will be playing again next month. The Finnish circle of active RPGA players isn't overly large, so the games tend to be few and far between.

I guess I'm weird or something, but I actually like managing all the paperwork of a Living Greyhawk PC.

Heh. From what I hear, it's much less fiddly than it used to be. :)

Cheers!
