Related to my is the cleric a common archtype poll...and to my whole current line of thought. I am defining the question as this: Have you played a cleric more than once, or played just one but for a pretty extended period?

Got "stuck" with cleric in my first 3ed game. Turned out to be almost as strong as the fighter until I discovered "stacking" rules. Our first house rule was that clerics got bonus feats as a wizard, lol. We got rid of those too, and I was still pretty house.

I've always played cleric. Primarily in 2nd because it was my choice by default. Now in 3rd, cause I got some great gods to serve. :) *Proudly displays his dual battle axes.* :D

I play a Dwarven Cleric in RPGA because it seems hardly anyone does.
I even blew my feat so I could carry my god's warhammer into combat. ;)

As the DM, I play out many clerics both good and evil. Although the evil ones never seem to stick around for longer than a few rounds of combat. :)

G'day

I played a 1e cleric in an badly-DMed trip to the Barrier Peaks back in 1983 or 1984, but it only lasted half a session, so I don't count that. And my first ever character was a Magic-User. Apart from that it has always been Fighters, Monks, Paladins, and Bards for me.

I guess that this might be because I often end up covering the weakness of a party after everyone else has chosen their favourite class. We usually end up short of combat ability, and needing either a part-time healer or a part-time caster of utility spells. In my last campaign but one as a character-player we were supposed to be playing spies, and ended up with no ranged fighter, no healer, no face man, not utility spellcaster, and no sneakthief. I played a bard to try to cover all those bases (and by the time we made 12th level he *rocked the house*).

I have mentioned clearly to the other players that I am very selfish when it comes to healing spells. I'm even willing to go out of my way to not heal those of a faith that do not agree with my own god.

If you've ever played Everquest, you know how annoying it can be to just have people walk up to you and ask for healing. That's no fun! So, I've gotten into the habit of being proud. After all, they cannot heal themselves now can they? If they're gonna need something from me, I'm gonna need to be addressed with the appropriate respect deserving of a servant of my god.

So, for the truly uncivilized, but often needy, adventurers, I often suggest that they begin their request thusly, "Oh kind and benevolent servant of Heironious, won't you remove these undignified wounds suffered by those who would serve in your cause?" Those are the kinds of requests that would get the best attention, and those who wait to pledge their allegience (even if temporarily) will find themselves suffering a bit longer. And it helps to avoid all the other PCs crying for the cleric at the same time too. First one to address me properly usually gets the best healing spell I can afford!

Besides, it's more fun this way!

I answered no, although as a DM I get to play many clerics ! :D

Seriously, the fact is I mostly DM so I never really get to play any class. Furthermore, I have a tendency to play rogues, bards, fighters or barbarians these days, when I get a chance to play.

I've played Clerics, and I like playing Clerics, but they're still not as much fun as some of the other classes.

Dispite being immensly beefed up in 3e (compared to 2e and 1e), I still find that nobody really wants to play the healing guy.
