Healing skill allow unconscious a second wind?

If a character uses the healing skill on an unconscious character, can he use the ability to give him a second wind rather than the ability to stabilize a dying character? We didn't see anything int he rules against this, but the opinion was split.

I'm sure this must have been touched on, but I don't remember seeing anything on it. The situation was the only character with healing ability (a Warlord) was at -1 HP. The fighter had the healing skill, but that wasn't allowed to bring him to consciousness.

Yes, a successful heal check can trigger a second wind, but a PC can only use one second wind per encounter, so if the unconscious character has already used their second wind, then you can only stabilize with a heal check.

Not only is it legal, its got a DC right in the heal section of the phb. While stabilizing someone is DC 15, giving them a second wind is only DC 10.

Like Spinmd said, if the person on the ground, doesnt have any winds left, you can only stabilize him or use an potion or something..

Yes, the second wind was still there. The issue the DM had was why there was a DC for an unconscious character if he could use his second wind.

Using your second wind requires an action (standard for most races, minor for dwarves), and unconscious characters can't take actions.

The DC10 Heal check allows you to trigger someone's second wind without requiring them to take an action.
