Heighten and Epic Metamagic

This is the way I interpret heighten spell:

Benefit: You may increase the effective level of a spell by one level. This increases everything related to spell level, such as DC, ability to penetrate a globe of invulnerability, etc. The spell takes up a slot one level higher than normal.

(you may apply this feat to the same spell multiple times)

Why they didn't just write it this way, I don't know.

So obviously if this was the way the feat was written, improved metamagic wouldn't affect it any more than getting improved metamagic three times would let you empower something twice for only +1 level.

However, it's not written that way... in fact there's no level adjustment per se written into the ability. You set the level to something and it takes up a slot of that level. So... I still don't think it works on heighten... although I don't think it would be a big deal if it did. Who uses heighten, after all? Anyone? I think I've used it once, only because I got it for free, and it didn't even help.

I do definitely like taking one level of improved metamagic for making empower half cost. Double power for just +2 levels... hells yeah.

Accordingly you could treat it as a variable level cost feat, which by-the-way is the way you deal with it in terms of other MM feats.

As long as you raise your spell level by +1 you get a free increase for each of your IMM feats.
