heighten spell

This is probably a stupid question...but how do we use heighten spell feat?

You choose the spell level that you want a spell to be from (ex: Turn Magic missle into a level 8 spell). How can we do this, is it a choice and we roll a concentration check? is there a max level we can spend it at?

For example, i have a Lvl 3 Beguiler. Taking heighten spell feat, how do I cast a higher level spell?

In the srd it says:
The heightened spell is as difficult to prepare and cast as a spell of its effective level.

How do we calculate how dificult it is to cast?

Thanks,
Al

Well, a heightened magic Missile to an 8th level slot would have the DC of an 8th level spell, not a 1st level spell. It would also be able to get past minor globe or the regular globe of invulnerability.

But you have to already be able to cast 8th level spells... if you can do that, then there isn't anything to calculate.

Does a 3rd level Beguiler even have access to higher then 1st level spells yet?

Ok, level 3 caster ... has 1st and 2nd level slots (and 0 level ...)

Wants to Heighten his Charm Person spell ...

Charm Person is first level ...

You want to Heighten it to 2nd.

It now uses a 2nd level slot ... acts as if it was a 2nd level spell ... (ie spell turning would see it as a 2nd level spell, not a 1st level ...), and it has the DC of a 2nd level spell.

It requires you to have a 2nd level slot ...
It requires you to have a key ability score of 12 (in order to cast 2nd level spells) ...

The difference is, if we has use Extend Spell (+1 slot adjustment) to that same Charm Person ... It would use up the same 2nd level slot, but would still act as a 1st level spell for such things as spell turning, etc. You would also only need a key ability score of 11 to cast it ...

Cheers!
