Hellish Rebuke

Our warlock cast this on a leader before the leader could become invisible then proceeded to dance around 3 enemies provoking opportunity attacks from them. The warlock was knocked down to 2 hp but the enemy leader died.

We called this the Rocky Balboa tactic. It was hilarious.

" Hey Mortimer what are you doing!!!"

" WINNING!!!""

It seems to fit within the letter of the rule and the spirit of the class. After all, we're talking about characters willing to bargain bits of their soul for a little more power. If you're willing to do that, is dragging a dagger across your hand for an extra blast of damage that big of a stretch?

That said, I think there are better ways of doing damage. I'd rather do another Hellish Rebuke or Eldritch Blast, personally.

Well, that damage is triggered only once. Note that the text does not include "everytime".

A multiclassed Infernal Warlock/Wizard/Blood Mage could get a lot of mileage out of that. Especially a tiefling with Hellfire Blood...

Would you allow the warlock to wound himself to cause the extra damage?
No. As far as I'm concerned there's a corrolary to the legitimate targets rule, valid threats. If the attacker isn't trying to legitimately do you harm, or is not capable of doing so reasonably, then effects due to damage from them do not occur.
