Hello from the new guy and general RPG Q's

Welcome!
Anyone here remember old games called Rune Quest and Traveller?
Well, I've never been a friend of Sci-Fi rpgs, but Runequest is still one of my favorite systems. Imho, it has found the ideal compromise between realism and playability.

Other favorites of mine are Ars Magica (which is getting better and better with every new edition) and Mage - the Ascension (though I don't much care for the nWoD version).

Some more stuff...

The original publishers of RuneQuest have a new edition of their generic version, Basic Roleplaying, out.

Steve Perrin himself sells a “successor” that he calls SPQR.

Traveller’s creator, Mark Miller, sells reprints of Traveller and many other GDW games. He’s also got his own “T5” edition of Traveller coming out. He’s cursed with never having a decent web site, though. ^_^

Thanks for the info on Mongoose, I will check that out, that is great news for me... can anyone recommend any US based dealers that I could purchase these from?
If you want, you could also order directly from the Mongoose site - from my experience Mongoose ship books quite quickly and their customer service is superb.

I got my copy of Mongoose’s Dragon Warriors from Amazon. (Mainly because I had a gift card.) The other Mongoose product I have was bought from a local game store. Their products aren’t exactly hard-to-find.

I spent some time looking over the Mongoose website, it is some neat stuff for sure, but can anyone tell me how the new RuneQuest and Traveller hold up compared to the old ones? I would have been playing these originally in the mid 80's, so I have no clue if there have been different versions or editions. I'm interested in getting some of the core books from these new editions, but wanted to first get some feedback from anyone who may remember the old ones and also have read or played the new ones.

I am in a good point in my life right now, I have four sons, and the two oldest ones are starting to get into games like D&D and it would be neat to see if I could get them also going in one of these two games since I was a big fan when I was their age. I am leaning towards Traveller so we could get a change of flavor with the sci-fi theme, but RuneQuest was always a favorite of mine for some reason.

Welcome to the boards! I hope you enjoy your stay. We try to make it a friendly place for interesting discussion of lots of different games.

I did a quick search, and here are some fairly recent Traveller threads to check out:

http://www.enworld.org/forum/genera...veller-actual-plays-recommend-ap-threads.html (short Traveller thread)
http://www.enworld.org/forum/general-rpg-discussion/241426-space-rpgs.html (long thread on space RPGs in general
http://www.enworld.org/forum/genera...about-traveller-forked-thread-space-rpgs.html (another, longer Traveller thread forked from the above)

MongooseMatt regularly posts in the Publishers forum to promote new releases, as well.

Didn't find any recent threads specifically on Runequest, but if you start one, I'm sure you'll get feedback.

Thanks for those links! I will check them out this evening. I'm also going to start a new thread to try and draw in some RQ players to get some first hand feedback on that as well.

Thanks,
D.
