Help a poor goblin with making new PCs, a new world and... more...

a good start!

you may want to define the Elves who train Wizards, and also decide if they'll be training sorcerers as well. if not sorcerers, you could include a god(dess) of magic in the temple to give a sorcerer (and/or bard) training in magic casting.

you could also put in a small bard school, or one prominent bard who'd do any PC training. (or even a cleric of a god of music, poetry, etc.)

with that you'd have training available for wizards, sorcerers, bards -- clerics and possibly paladins (in the temple), fighters (at the schools)

this leaves out barbarians (maybe a nearby tribe, or nomadic tribe who comes into town to trade once or twice a year), druids (nearby druid grove?), monks (monastary waaaay up in the hills?), ranger (prominent ranger lives with druids?), and rogues (parents of a PC rogue could be town's locksmiths ;) )

OR you could disallow some PC classes.....

enemies - could be as simple as, one PC come to the party with information that an ancient abandoned temple/tower/keep has recently been inhabited by orcs/goblins/kobolds:) and needs to be cleaned out. the PCs could by hired by a town official (mayor, etc.) to do the same

So where's Nightfall? The Scarred Lands needs its champion ;)

I'm here now. I was just busy trying to do some writing for my Story Hour.

If you have R&R then you might know something about a guy named Dar'Tan and perhaps even a god named Vangal. Let me say this: If you want a world where being a hero is tough, where wilderness means something, where gods and other worldly beings often mix it up with humans and other races. Oh and we do have dragon riders, just they use MOCK dragon. :)

Have you gone to Wizards' site?

There are free adventures there that you could take a look at and possibly convert or just run as is with the group.

As for the PCs, that's really up to you guys. We certainly don't know enough about these people to suggest what kinds of characters they would like to play. Again, with skaters, I'd expect lots of monks and high dexterity types, but that's based on a stereotype.

you could also create a world of your own. there's plenty of rules for this in the DMG.

you could even include your players in on the creation of your setting.

Some of the best campaign worlds I've played in have been created in this manner. Go to the player of the cleric and say, "tell me about your god." Go to the player of the fighter and say, "tell me about your homeland."

Actually, that might not work very well for new players, but you never know.

Published adventures are great for starting campaigns. Go with Sunless Citadel or Of Sound Mind, and start small. Detail a few regions around the starting area, jot down where the nearest large city is, and start playing. You can always add more later, and only a very astute player would notice any plot holes. :)

I always ask my PCs to describe at least one group to which they have an alliegiance, how they got involved with it, what benefits it gives them and what relationship they now have with it.

So a Cleric would have alliegiance to his temple, and Fighters alligeance to the Fighting Schools your using (great idea BTW)
a Ranger might be part of the Towns Militia, part of whose role is patrolling the surrounding hills on the look out for Goblin raiders who occasionally steal the village cattle.
