Its worth an extra 25gp per casting (a scroll based identify costs 125 while a personally cast identify cost 100) to free up your spell slot for something that you want to be able to do "in the field" and much more often.

Assuming over the life of a campaign you have to cast Identify 100 times, you have basically paid 2500 gold for an extra 1st level spell slot.

My player who runs a Sorcerer bought a Wand of Identify -- given the high cost of 50 Identifies (5,000 gp), another 750 gp isn't a big deal.

Ahh. That's a 3.5 change I hadn't noticed. Identify now only covers one item, rather than 1 item/level..

Makes a bit more sense in that light.
