Ah! The hair-of-the-dog treatment makes more sense now that it's clear that spider-eating is part of the story. Up to now I enjoyed the off-kilter reading of your situation as:

Of course, it doesn't mean that someone won't misremember something about eating the corpse of a spider (or its predatory eco-companion, the spider-eating rat!) to regain the strength. That is, there's really no reason not to go ahead and get him to eat a bug, anyway, in my opinion.

It is even more fun if you find a real spider and hand it the player and say - "Eat this and your character is full up in Strength again.

Sort of a perversion of Pirate Cat's 'Peeps for EXP' where a player can get enough experience to level when they a just shy of the experience for that level by eating some very old marshmallow peeps.
