[help] Dodge Grand Caravan cargo space

BiggusGeekus

That's Latin for "cool"
Hey,

The deal is that I'm moving a chest of drawers that is 6 feet by 4 feet by 2 feet (2 meters by over one meter by something less than one meter). A 10' rental truck is going to run me $900. A Dodge Grand Caravan will run me $650. However, I don't know if the chest is going to fit in there. It'll be a rental, so I can't abuse the vehicle. Will that chest fit in a Grand Caravan? According to dodge.com it will, but that's cubic foot space, which doesn't always map to reality.

And to head off some questions: yes, these seem to be my best options and yes, I've looked at other options.

Build a cardboard mock up of the chest. Doesn't need to be pretty, just the same size. The rental company shouldn't charge you to try the fit.

It will fit. You just need to take the seats out.

However, good god, man! Why is it so expensive! Around here, you can rent a caravan for 30 bucks.

Hmmm. I'll be renting in Houston, but this is a good idea to try out here.

Thanks.

Houston to DC. It's several days and there's a one-way drop off fee. Which is a problem, because If I remove the seats, I have to take them with me.

In hindsight it would have been cheaper to just ship the thing. But I already got the ticket down, so I may as well follow through.

renting in houston, but where are you driving it to?

rental things can be quite funny. It was cheaper for me to rent in Columbus, drive to pittsburgh and pick things up and drive back, then to rent in pitsburgh and drive to columbus.

Ouch...well, it is still possible to fold the seats. You will not be able to see out the rear-view though.

Have you tried looking into the Outback? It may work for you.

Washington, DC. Well, northern Virginia.

Yeah, the people who want to charge me $900 seem to think this a real big laugh.

Have you checked to see how much it would be to rent in virginia drive down, pick it up, and drive it back? Many times when driving from A to B, the company charges you a big fee to get the truch back to A.

Yeah, I've been looking around.

What I really need is a cargo van, but the key problem is finding companies that are willing to let me drive the thing one-way. That's the biggest obstacle. There are plenty of vehicles that can get the job done, but everybody wants me to bring them back.

Cripes. Now that I think about it, I'd be better off buying a $1,000 cargo van and reselling it back up here for $500 or whatever. Too late now, not enough time.
