Help EN Worlders!

Many department and grocery stores hire people to do restocking during the night. They frequently include a shift bonus that makes the pay sort of reasonable. And they all have trouble getting reliable people who actually show up and work most of the time. So there is a good chance of makeing supervisor quickly which means more money.

You could also try going to school and earning a degree, if you don't have one. Non-hourly jobs are usually a lot more stable in their schedule.

That was the idea. Go to school, get my General, then get into the Radiological program or the Nursing program so that I can get out of construction, but then the wife got with child and we kinda need to get me into something by the end of Janurary.

I have been doing some school for the last ten years or so, I have a couple certifications but everything I can do is day time hours only, so I need to find something that is night time and something that pays.

Stay-at-Home-Dad and you can make furniture (or dice rollers) in your garage in the evenings and sell them online. Once the kid starts school you can start doing some carpentry during school hours. That's my two cents . . .

Been thinking about furniture making, but the problem is I am not a finish carpenter, I am more of a framing &/or a foundations kinda carpenter, point with saying that is, I am not so sure my carpentry skills are good enough to make furniture that someone would buy.

Are you desperate to gt away of construction completely, or just off site.

'Cause it sounds like something in architectural design/draughting would suit you. I don't mean becoming a full blown architect (that'd take years), but doing the 'bog extensions' -little domestic jobs that wouldn't warrant an architects fees. You could meet clients and do surveys in the evenings when people are home from work, and then draw them up at home during the day.

I don't know if there is a market for that sort of thing in the US (or even if it's legal), but I know quite a few people who supplement there income that way over here.

The tricky bit is getting the work, but I assume you have had dealing with builders and architects in the past. Have a word with a big architectural practice and get them to direct any jobs that are too small your way. Alternatively, ask around and see if you can find someone else with the same plan with more jobs on than they can do.

Actually I would like to get off the site, but I like it enough to stay for another ten years. I have had a few close calls, and am suffering from some injuries (spent three years recovering from an elbow injury).

To many guys I have known are out on permanent disability (blown backs, knees, elbows, wrists, etc).

My wife wants me to quit and get into something else, but understands my love of the job, and my dislike of it too.

The whole idea is to get out of working days so that I can stay home and raise our daughter, then when Mrs Harmon comes home go to work a couple nights a week to help out with the bills (three years of out of work has put us in serious debt and the settlement paid less then $.25 on the dollar for wages lost (and I got the max settlement allowed by law).

Your suggestion is a good one, but I am not sure how to approuch that and with little in the way of contacts in that area (I am a grunt carpenter with little contact with those people you spoke of) of offices I am kinda in a spot where its gonna be more luck then anything for that to work.

Thank you for the suggestion though, maybe I can figure something out instead of never considering the idea.
