Help fleshing out ideas for a continuing campaign...

I posted this in the Plots forum and received no response. I am hoping to get some here. :)

I needed to take a break from DMing for a bit. So the last session I DMed, the group, all at 10th level, finally found the bad guy they were looking for. Here's a quick synopsis of what happened:

Group has been hounded by the "villain" throughout the entire campaign whether they knew it or not. Group goes looking for villain (a vampire) and his partner (a lich Queen). They explore a dungeon and when they walked past a certain area everyone made a Will save. The monk failed and proceeded to kick everyone's butt. In this order: the barbarian killed the paladin, the cleric killed the barbarian, the monk killed the cleric. Note: this was not the players decision so there is no "you killed me you bastard!" conflict. The monk leaves and comes back and finds the Vampire and the Queen standing over the bodies. Both cast a spell and the monk dies. (Gotta love the BoVD!)

And that's where it ended.... for now. I am working on a continuation for the story and have some ideas I'd like to flesh out. I am thinking that the PCs will be awakened by a very good, very powerful, ally they have known for the entire campaign. They will be told that each of them, in "undeath," was forced to serve a master of some sort. I'm picturing the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse here. Like maybe the paladin serving Death, or something like that.

Anyway, the PCs are told that each of the Horsemen have decided that if the Vampire and Queen are dealt with, then they can split up the Realms (playing in FR here) into 4 sections. They have devised something, not sure what yet, that will allow them to destroy the V&Q when the time is right. Until then, it is in 4 pieces and each Horseman has a piece. Of course, the PCs must find all 4 pieces, put them together, figure out what it does and use it.

That's what I have so far. The problem is that I am creative up to a point. I'm not creative enough to write a whole campaign from scratch. I usually take existing adventures and modify them as necessary.

So my questions are these:

Any ideas on what the item could be?

What adventures can be used in this?

Does this sound like a plausible plot?

All suggestions greatly appreciated. :D

A good choice for an item that has to be put together is an amulet of some kind with many different spell abilities. That way, each small piece can have themed abilities, but when combined you gain access to additional powers.

In this case, anti-undead spells would be good for one piece, healing for another, increased turning powers for another and...ack, can't think of something for the last piece.

I like the plot, I think it'll work. Plus, you have four small adventures culminating in fighting the existing piece owners before the large climax where they get the rematch against the two main villains! Fun stuff.

That's my bit, see what everyone thinks.

Could the pieces be related to the phylactery of the lich and some coffin like equivalent for the Vampire?

I like the idea of the pieces gradually increasing their power, too.

Maybe each piece enables the pcs to change a little bit towards the eventual goal of giving them some type that gives them a fighting chance.

Sort of like the prestige races from Oathbound.
