Help! I'm in pain.

In the land of pain, the kidney stone is king and the tooth ache is a close second.
Tooth aches are bad! but a kidney stone will lay you out.
just had my first stone a couple months ago... I would rather break a bone than have another one of those!!!

My mom used to get kidney stones all the time (she loves grapefruit juice, which can cause them due to the calcium), and she's said it's the only pain she's ever felt comparible to cihld birth.

I had a wisdom tooth go bad a couple of years ago. Could not BELIEVE how painful it was. I broke my femur clean in two ages ago and had broken bones grind together and poke into the surrounding muscle which caused the bones to grind together and poke into the muscles more which would just start the whole cycle over. If I had to choose between that and the toothache again it would actually be a pretty tough choice.

My advice--talk to another dentist immediately. One of the pills they prescribed to me when I had my toothache made everything bad in my life go away all at once. Very nice. ;) Still had to suffer through about a month and a half of insane, blinding agony until I was able to get in to the oral surgeon and have the bad tooth and the other three wisdom teeth removed.

How are you doing Zander? Did you find something that helped? Or a dentist who could fit you in?

As far as kidney stones go, yes, they are excruciating. I was laid out for 3 weeks. The pain was so bad it made me sick to my stomach, so after a couple days my stomach was so ripped up I could no longer eat. So no food for those three weeks. I have a high tolerance for meds, so the Lortab they gave me (the strongest stuff they could give without putting me in the hospital) didn't help. Not fun. I scared Ao by continually falling asleep in the tub cause it was the only time I was relaxed enough to sleep.

Zander, I feel for you. I've had tooth pain before--needed a root canal--and it truly is excruciating. Tylenol with codeine is wonderful stuff, but it didn't work for me with my tooth either. Actually, nothing stopped the pain until the dentist did the root canal, so I hope you found someone to see you sooner than Tuesday.

Thanks v. much to everyone who tried to help. ;)

I'm OK now but last weekend was among the worst few days of my life. The analgesics didn't help much including the paracetamol/codeine ones I already mentioned, ibuprofen, aspirin and hydrocod (an opioid). The pain got so bad that at times I was stamping on the floor, bumping blindly into walls, doing my best not to yell.

The only thing that really helped was rinsing my mouth with ice water. But it only relieved the pain while I was doing it. As soon as I stopped, the pain returned so I had to do it continuously. As a result I didn't sleep at all Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. I also had hardly anything to eat.

Then on Monday afternoon the pain finally went away by itself. What a blessed relief!

I went to the dentist on Tuesday. Turns out one of my molars has an abscess. The pain was caused by the build up of infected fluid. Only when the fluid discharged into the surrounding soft tissue was the pressure removed and with it the pain. My dentist gave me a prescription for antibiotics and his mobile number! :p

I start root canal treatment in a few weeks.
