Help Judge a Spell: Wall of Paper

Anubis said:
Just a note, not all wall spells are Level 4. In fact, most of them arent'.

Wall of Fire, Level 4
Wall of Force, Level 5
Wall of Ice, Level 4
Wall of Iron, Level 6
Wall of Stone, Level 5
Wall of Thorns, Level 5

It depends on what the wall does. It it summons a swarm, though, it should be a summon spell, not a wall spell. I'm not aware of any other wall spell that does such a thing. Maybe there should be two spells. One would be wall of paper, which would be Level 2, and the other would be swarm of paperback books, and that would be Level 3.
Ah. I knew that given enough time someone would invariable critisize my critisism. LoL. OK, what I *meant* to say was.......wall spells *start* at 4th level.

Questions

What happens if I fire an arrow at someone beyond the wall.

For melee purposes does the wall try and block everything that might go through it or only what the caster directs. ie... Is it self intelligent at the site of the wall.

If the wall obscures can the caster see beyond it clearly?

I like the idea of the caster being required to bring a small magic chest of paper to form the wall, esp if it is a relatively low level spell. Some element should tie the caster to the wall to make tracing the spell caster who uses it stupidly easier. ie. the caster himself must write runes on each of the 666 sheets of paper needed (or some such). Could the wall be made with different coloured paper for better concealment ie. camo paper?

Are the papers flammable? Can flaming papers be commanded to Bind for any more damage? Just being able to disperse a 10' cube of flaming paper into a forest etc... would make this a very useful spell.

Can the papers be dosed with contact poison? or Halucinogenic Spores????

I see an avenue for abuse which relies on the multitude of guaranteed attacks in the event of a bind. If each sheet is soaked with contact poison and the foe is coverred head to toe.....

I like it as a 2nd level spell its effective and it has limitations to justify its power at that level, ie purely physical barrier, or binding mass<purely physical not overwhelming in strength and subject to high winds, fire, dispelling or erasure spells> if you can make a version that makes use of a warding rune or a symbol providing magical/mystical protection then it should be a higher level.

I like this idea. I look forward to a rewritten version incorporating some of the suggestion from this thread, then I'll see about adding some suggestions of my own.

Keep up the good work.

the material component should be a stack of paper, a couple of dozen sheets at least. you should even allow for the scavenging of paper for the spell, empty scrolls, books. note, this probably won't be common in a world without much paper. Perfect spell for Eberron, or my own steampunk campaign.

i'll enjoy the strange looks from my party, "why are you lugging around that bundle of old papers, shining?"... you'll see, is all i reply...

...looking forward to revised spell. anytime soon? please, please.
