Help making an enlightened fist

First Post
I don't have my books in front of me, so I apologize if I make a mistake.

I want to make a 6th-level character.

Enlightened Fist is a prestige class in Complete Arcane that requires "3rd level arcane caster" (among other things like 8 ranks of concentration and a couple of feats). There is a feat Practiced Spellcaster in Complete Arcane that increases your caster level for one class by 4 as long as the caster level is not above your hit dice.

So can I take one level of wizard/sorcerer/wu-jen and then take Practiced Spellcaster for that arcane class and meet those requirements. I'm trying to avoid taking unnecessary non-monk levels to get into the class, does this work?

No, because practiced spellcaster doesn't give you the ability to cast higher level spells. It only increases your caster level. So, a "first level mage / 4th level something else "with the feat can cast his 1st and 0 level spells as normal, but he is considered 5th level for effects, duration, dispelling, all that. It should be noted that your newly improved caster level can not exceed your hit dice.

Sorry, but to get in that PrC you have to take at least 5 levels of wizard or 6 of sorcerer / wu jen.

Good luck

Well, if it says, "Arcane Caster Level 3," then the feat would work. If it says, "Ability to cast 2nd-level Arcane Spells," then Tatsukun is correct.

If it actually says, "3rd-level Arcane caster" (which I don't think it does), then you'd need to actually be at least level 3 in an Arcan casting class.

I don't know if it's a good thing to avoid taking non-monk levels. You would wind up lagging behind as far as access to spells goes. Your caster level would suffer as well.

Incidentally, make sure to look into the Ascetic Mage feat from Complete Adventurer, which is specifically tailored for sorcerer/monks.

From the Enlightened Fist PrC requirements:
Spells or Spell-Like Abilities: Arcane caster level 3rd.

It doesn't matter what level of spells you can cast, or how many. Just as long as you have a caster level of third. A Monk 4/Sorceror 1 with Practised Spellcaster can qualify just fine.

Heck, a Bard 1 with PS could qualify, even though it can only cast 0-level spells. :p

The requirement is "Arcane caster level 3rd", which indeed means that Practiced spellcaster would help you. Whether it's a good choice or not I don't know.
