Now, I am curious - when your party first obtained teleport spells, you had posted asking for some RBDM advice on how to make teleport "interesting". Did this scenario come about from any of your ideas in the previous thread?

Not exactly. This was planned from earlier. Well, not exactly planned. I knew that if they tried to Teleport from a certain location that it would plop them in the middle of Hell. And I deemed it likely that they would try to Teleport from there. But it was by no means a sure thing. The trip to Hell was informative and exciting but not essential to the main story line.
