help me brainstorm for backstory ideas

Our group is starting an epic campaign, so we're starting at level 20. I had a Ftr1/Wiz17/Bladesinger2 character, but I really wasn't feeling it, so my DM is letting me create a new character. I need some ideas for a backstory for her. Dunno why, I just keep thinking of this character as a "her."

This charcter is a Sorc6/Incantatrix9/Archmage5. My biggest sticking point is figuring out WHY she is this class combo. I'm sort of brainstorming for ideas, but realy coming up blank. If I can get started, I've usually got no problem writing up a great background. Just having a bit of writer's block getting started here.

The group is about to undertake a quest to the elemental plane of water to retrieve some pearls. The campaign is probably going to be primarily a planar travelling campaign using the manual of the planes as a guide (so starting in Union and all that).

(For those who have been following along, this is the same character I've been working on for awhile. I've got two more weeks to finish up. :-) )

Hmmm...I play a fairly similar character myself, although he's much lower in level the progression will be a lot like what you have now. He's obsessed with power and the manipulation of energy. He's evil as the day is long, and feels the only way he'll ever be "safe" is by the vast accumulation of power and contingencies. Starting life a "lowly" wizard, as his power grew he realized so did the potential for mastery of that power. Incantatrix/Archmage in particular are really about doing things with magic that defy and break the boundaries of what is normally possible. Anyway, that's my deal. Here's some ideas for you:

1) Incantatrix is designed to protect against Outsiders, and because you have 9 levesl here, clearly is was inportant to your character. Maybe she grew up in an area "blessed" with a number of portals to the Outer Planes, and interesting visitors were always popping up. Stemming from a need to protect her community, she walks the path of the Incant Protector idea.

2) Raised by strange monks that believe all Outsiders are bad by definition, even the good ones. Make her lawful neutral and frightned/angered by all outsiders. Should make for interesting role-playing in the Planes.

3) Her sorcerous power has always seemed like a gift from beyond, but has always been notoriously difficult to control. She walks the path of Incant/Arch in an ongoing effort to use metamagic and Archmage abilities to control the awesome magic that lives in her soul. Would help explain the Feat Skill Focus (Spellcraft) in character.

4) Play her like my idiotic, power hungry wizard. No problem too large, no creature too powerful for my insane power. CN would work. The rest of your party would always be pulling you away from some hideous mistake you're about to make. Because you're playing a sorcerer, you help this out with a slightly lower that normal Int or Wis. Your character will have had to take Iron Will anyway, so that should help make up the diff if you take the lower Wis.

Hope this helps.

Well, building on this idea is the: "I must and shall become a sorcerer!" Through magical experimentation (and perhaps tampering with planar allies or forces), she just forced herself past every obstacle she could imagine.

Hmm, I like the idea about growing up in an area rich with portals. But rather than protector, let's say that her powers were unlocked by a being from Archos (or whatever the good aligned plane is) as a gift for helping them at risk to herself. Perhaps she freed said being from someone who had summoned him and was using him for evil means. She had always known that she could make strange things happen, especially when angry, but never knew quite how or why.

Perhaps some elaboration in that direction? There needs to be something in there about a love for good-aligned outsiders and a hate for those who would cause harm (be they neutral or evil (though a neutral outsider who did no harm would be tolerable)).

I just got a very interesting idea....

The Spellrager PrC...

....the main power is to go into a "Mage Rage" that increases Cha and Wis the way that Str and Con is increased for a barbarian....

Maybe it gives them a temporary boost in spells per day...massive arcane powers....an uncanny sense of perception....

You make this kid mad, and you won't get a greataxe to the skull, you'll get a Fireball shoved down your throat....

Not really that helpful, but I thought I'd share. :)

Okay, so here's what I'm looking at:

Sonja grew up in an area rich in portal to other planes. It wasn't terribly unusual for an occasional outsider to come in and attack one of the villages in the area. In most cases, they weren't overly powerful and the villagers would manage to drive them off with minimal loss. Conversely, it was also not unheard of for the occasional good outsider to come through as well. If that was common, though, few people knew of it.

She also knew that she was always different somehow. When she got really angry or upset, she could make things happen. She couldn't really control it and often felt terrible about it after it happened. Once she had almost killed a boy who kept picking on her. After that, she became something of an outcast among many of the people in the town. Most of the rumors that now circulated about her were of the less than complimentary she's a witch variety. A number of the kids were not even allowed to associate with her, while others made fun of her behind her back. Never to her face though, not any more. She spent much of her time studying. There was a ruined tower about an hour's walk from the village. She often spent time in there studying old books and manuscripts. (explains the Educated feat)

One day when she was 17, she had been out for a walk with one of her few friends. When they returned to the village, they found it in disarray, having been attacked by a marauding band of imps (or something, I'm open to suggestions here). Many people had died in this raid and houses had been looted and burned.

Following the trail back, she found that it led to the home of a reclusive wizard. Sneaking inside, she found that he had built his home right over two portals. Inside one set of wards, there was a beautiful being. He glowed with golden radiance from head to foot. (need more help with a description and exactly what being. Should be from Archon or one of the other good aligned planes). In the other portal was what appeared to be some sort of demon or devil. He glowered maliciously and smelled of brimstone. He pounded against the wards, but was unable to get past them. In the corner was a pile of treasure that the last of the imps was placing his treasure on to. There was also an altar onto which was tied another young girl about her own age. She was naked and spread-eagled on top of it. Dark stains ran down the side of the altar.

The girl looked in terror at the wizard as he picked up a tray full of instruments of torture and began another incantation. He raised one of them and stood over the girl who was now pleading for her life and crying. "Don't worry, said the mage. I'll make this lingering and painful. The more you scream and suffer, the more powerful I'll become." He touched the girl with one of the devices and she screamed in pain, her back arching in agony as she struggled to get away.

"Did you like that my pretty? Lightning in a stick. It hurts doesn't it?" The girl merely sobbed for an answer. He moved it towards her again. Sonja could stand no more. Losing control, she unleashed a blast of force that knocked the wizard back. He tripped over his brazier and fell through the wards into the reach of the demon. It quickly snatched him up and laughed evilly as it tore him apart and ate him, then disappeared in a puff of brimstone.

Sonja ran over and freed the girl, giving her a cloak to cover herself. She helped her to a chair to sit down. "Bravo," came a voice from behind her. She turned and saw the glowing being clapping in appreciation.

She looked at him warily, "Who are you?"

"I am <name>. That was very brave of you. He could have killed you with barely a thought." (need a name for him)

Sonja was still breating heavily, "I...I lost control. That happens when I get really upset sometimes."

"If you'll free me, I'll give you ability to control your power. You have the blood of a dragon, but you must learn control. I will teach you that control. Just follow the directions in that book right there. I'll help you understand the directions if you need it." Sonja look questioningly back at the girl. She seemed to be in pretty bad shape. "I'll also heal her if you'll help me."

"All right, I'll do it." Following his directions, she completed the incantations that would free him. True to his word, the being walked over to the girl and with a gesture, he healed her.

That's about as much as I've got right now. The being kept his word and taught Sonja to control the energies in her soul. Don't know what happened to the girl they rescued (any suggestions?) Shortly after this, she fell in with a passing adventuring group (need a name for them too). A year or so later after a particularly bad adventure which cost half the group their lives, the group split up after returning to the city they based out of. There she found someone who was able to teach her how to better control her magic and fight against outsiders. I'm not sure how long it should take her to get those 9 levels of Incantatrix though. Eventually she found someone who could further teach her to control the energies in her soul and she became an archmage as well.

That's about what I've got. Any feedback, suggestions for changes, etc would be appreciated.
