Help me create a Dwarf PC for the FR

First Post
I am starting a new campaign as a player tomorrow in the Forgotten Realms. Not my favorite setting, but the DM likes it.

It's been decided I'll have a Dwarf fighter, a mountain dwarf from the northern part of the realms.

I have Hammer and Helm, but I don't have access to the FRCS, and I need to create a character, and the DM would like to know If I want to strive towards a particular PrC. Can someone breifly tell me what dwarf PrC's might be good. I'm interested in one that would improve fighting ability and provide some divine magic ability. If there are any good PrC's, what do you need to know about them when creating a character who can progress to it?

It's not FR specific, but check out the Dwarven Rune-Priest from Bad Axe's Heroes of High Favor: Dwarves.

It's a dwarven fighter-cleric PrC, who battles his way to victory with his own strength, his deity's favored weapon, and divine guidance, using the magic of dwarven runes to adorn his weapons and armor (HoHF: Dwarves has dwarven rune feats, but there are similar rules for dwarven runecrafting in the FRCS).

PrC entry requirements are:

BAB +4
Craft 4 ranks each in any two of: armorsmithing, weaponsmithing, blacksmithing, or stonemasonry
Knowledge: dwarves 6 ranks
Feats: Martial weapon proficiency (all), a dwarven rune feat, Weapon focus with deity's favored weapon
Must have granted powers from two dwarven domains

The Rune-priest gains rune- and craft-related dviine powers, plus has its own divine spell list.

If I were going to make a dwarven rune priest, I'd probably start with a dwarven cleric at 1st level, then multi-class into fighter somewhere along the line (though the reverse would also work). The reason I'd start with cleric is that the War and Metal domains both grant free proficiency & focus in the deity's favored weapon -- so at 1st level its like having a dwarven fighter with 2 fewer hit points but access to divine spells. Dwarven War clerics rock!

Depending on your preferred favored weapon, I'd consider one of the following deities:

Haela Brightaxe (greatsword, take War & Dwarf domains)
Clangeddin Silverbeard (battleaxe, also War & Dwarf domains)
Dumathoin (warhammer, take Metal & Dwarf domains)

I prefer Haela & Clangeddin myself. Most of the dwarf-related cleric domains have spells & special abilities that complement a dwarven fighter well. Since you don't have FRCS:

- Dwarf domain (Great Fortitude feat, magic weapon as 1st level domain spell)
- Metal domain (Free Martial or Exotic Weapon Proficiency and Weapon focus in your choice of hammer. Magic weapon is 1st level domain spell)

Edit: There's the warpriest from Defenders of the Faith, too, but the Rune-priest has a better FR and dwarven flavor, IMO.
Have fun!

Here's one I made earlier...

This is completely legit IF the DM allows the crafting of items before play starts. It's made using 32 point buy and FULL starting cash.

EQUIPMENT: 3 bolts (MW, 5gp), Banded Mail (83gp), Heavy Crossbow (17gp), Large Steel Shield (7gp), Smiths Tools (MW, 18gp), Waraxe (MW, 110gp).

HISTORY: Malek was the son of a great dwarven fighter who fought against the derro of Elezanthur, the city that dwells in the mountains just a days travel away from Ugrek, his home city.
Having been great friends with Karl Grelstadt, a renowned dwarven fighter-smith, it was no surprise that Malek become the foster-son of Karl when his father and mother were slaughtered in a retributive strike by the derro.
Malek took to smithing like a vengeful spirit attacking its killers, focusing all his rage and grief into his craft. Before long, he was a skilled steel worker and won much acclaim from his peers.
Despite his love for metalworking and his obvious talent, he still grieves the loss of his parents and wishes to learn the ways of the warrior in order to avenge them. He is a quiet, unassuming man who is deeply respectful of his mentor and foster father and who loves his foster-mother dearly.
The one conflict he has is his sense of responsibility to Karl to keep on as a smith and his desire to become a fighter. Currently, he is on leave from his duties to Karl and is exploring his options as an adventurer, hoping to gain treasure, influence and power in order to avenge his parents deaths.

PERSONALITY: Malek is a dutiful and very controlled person who rarely lets his emotions show. In fact, he is quickly developing a reputation for being colder than the mountain stone. If he speaks it's only if he is replying to an elder, or someone he respects, or if it is to chastise those who he feels are beneath him. He is exceptionally racist, feeling that even mountain dwarves have lost the "true way" and that humans are far to short-lived to appreciate anything in depth and are therefore shallow and not worth knowing. He has never met any elves except the drow and therefore holds a severe grudge against all elves, not really making much of an effort to discern the difference between drow and other elves. Halflings are also something he has not experienced however he would most likely dislike their capricious and disrespectful natures.
Having said that, he is deeply respectful of those who earn his trust and respect. Someone would have to do more than just save his life to do that, however, as that is something that he would expect of any person in a position to do so. He never expects anything more from anyone else than what he is willing to give and despite his racist tendancies, he would not abandon a helpless elf to the whims of orcs. But he would also not go out of his way to bring the elf back to safety.

I have a Dwarf Fighter in Forgotten. (Having some problems staying alive, but its because he wants to be a Hero all the time)
I aimed him at becoming a Planar Champion from the Manual of the Planes. Its a kick ass PrC.
Fighter BAB, Good saves (Fort and Ref or Fort and Will cant remember which, but its two saves), 4+int skills and a good skill list and a bunch of cool powers he gains, Like See Invisibility, he gains power to attack ethereal creatures, to Rip Portals at higher levels, and some other planes sutff. Preq are easy (4 ranks in Knowledge: the Planes and some other stuff).
Its a really nice PrC, but quite unbalanced in my opinion.

My Dwarf had a Dwarven waraxe and full plate and I took the following feats: Exotic, Focus, Specilization (Waraxe), Expertise, Improved Trip. In 6th level I would take Knockdown and Iron will and later on probably Close-Quarter-Combat. He kicked some serious ass being only 4-5 level.

- Planar Champion - Manual of the Planes

if your DM has Silver Marches, there are two PrCs that you may like

1) Giant Killer - would improve on the dwarf's natural abilities to fight giantkin with enhanced mobility, ability to smite giants and damage reduction (3 at most) over the 10 levels of this PrC

(prereqs: BAB +5, dodge, mobility, toughness, hide 2, wilderness lore 2, must have slain 1 giant (alone or with a party)

2) Horde Breaker - gains favored enemy-like abilities against creatures troublesome in the north of Faerun (bugbears, gnolls, goblins, hobgoblins, kobolds or orcs). also gains Hold the Line (as the feat in sword and fist), tough to kill (can still take partial actions even if hit points are reduced from -1 to -9) and anvil of doom (akin to the dwarven defender's defensive stance). this PrC is 5 levels

(prereqs: BAB +5, power attack, cleave, great cleave, knowledge (local) 5, spot 4)
