Help me defend a village.

I'm not really using that sect movement, not yet (mostly because I started the campaign out in Angelsgate, and some things are known and familiar). The clergy will definitely be helping out some. I was mostly interested in the non-magical defenses they could create.

Hmm, Mercs of the Hawk. In the Players Guide to Fighters, Barbarians, I'm guessing? Haven't read as much on those. Might use them, but they could easily be preoccupied with the war front in my game.

The defensive strategies I'm seeing here seem fine but if you have several days then why isn't anyone venturing out and assessing the opposition?!? What are their numbers? Who are their leaders? How are they equiped? What are their resources? This will dictate how you defend your village.

Can you stealth their leaders and wage a little guerilla warfare on the enemy before they can take the fight to the village?

A typical PC party, assuming they're not too low level, can wreak all kinds of havok on a chaotic band of trolls in several days time. Sitting there and just waiting for them is just a bad idea all-around IMO.

Secondly, when defending a town, provide a gap in your defenses that will lure the trolls into a trap of your own making.

A'koss.

Just one more round of thanks for those who helped with suggestions yesterday.

A'Koss, my reasons for asking what type of defenses apply more to how the village is set up. Yes, the PCs were meant to be the active ones, but they only arrived a few hours before the mass troll assault. The city had sent out its best scouts a few days before, but they met their deaths (and consumption) at the hands of the trolls.

The village used a combination of deep trenches with hay, oil and pitch, and defensive palisades to protect portions of their town. They had flame arrows prepared for where they needed to fall back.

All in all, a great session with some cool backdrop scenes, thanks to you guys.

Glad we could be of help! I myself benefitted from collective creativity of these boards in planning my session for last night. What a great resource we all are to each other (*pats the collective ENWorld community back*)!

Yeah, I saw that too late, Rel. I would have chimed in, as I used to run plenty of 'Hell' encounters with Planescape. There's a great adventure in Well of Worlds called 'To Hell and Back' that is a great lead-in to Sigil and Planescape. Only ran that one two or three times.

Glad to hear your game is going well!

Well them or the Barbers are mentioned. They are kind more cut throat, but both groups apparently have standing in that area you're talking about. The Mercs of the Hawks aren't exactly stand up fighters but they make excellent back ups. My advice, have the city hire out another mercenary band, possibly form their own and maybe train them that way. But since this is trolls we are talking about (and I imagine a few Gaurak trolls would be involved) might want to consider sending a message out to the Vigils to maybe send a nice troll slayer you way. Just one will do, not to confuse the issue. That or maybe have a wandering member of Corean's heretic "Divine Fire" sect come in. Course he could be just a cleric of Vangal DISGUISED as a cleric of Corean. Wouldn't be the first time that happened.

How interesting that you would mention that. A Gaurak Troll (with the Fiendish template) led the group of trolls, molding their chaotic natures into something with a hint of purpose. Admittedly most of that purpose was 'eat everyone', but there were a few moments. "Send us the druid of Denev, or we eats everybody!!". =)

Session ran last night, big success. Almost half of the trolls are gone, the fiendish one has been dealt with, and there's an infestation of Troll Whelps (a la Monsternomicon) in the city.

Figures, where ever there's a troll, at least ONE of them is a Gaurak Troll. :p :) But that last one "Give us the Druid of Denev or we eats everyone!" was awesome. :) I laughed hard on that one. ;)
