help me drive my wizard insane

My wizard's spellbook is a sentient spellbook with dark desires. I am thinking of tying it in with Nerul. I am looking for some rules on insanity or corruption through the use of such an item. Can someone help me out with this?

Unearthed Arcana has sanity rules in it. So, if you have that book, that's an idea. Or Call of Cthulhu d20 (which is likely the same as the aforementioned UA).

I used an intelligent spellbook in a high level game once. I didn't use any rules, I just roleplayed the whole thing out, though. The caster got certain benefits from using the book to prepare spells from at first with no drawbacks. Then the book told him that in exchange for some of his life-force (Con score) it could bond with him to make him able to spontaneously cast certain spells. Slowly over time I just added ability after ability each didn't seem like too much, some Con here, some HP there, just a smidge of Wisdom, all in exchange for immunity to level drain, ability score damage, Necomancy specialization... Until the character was almost totally relyant on the book for functioning day to day.

I doubt that's exactly what you're aiming for, but don't overlook the possibility to corrupt through power. :)

well it will be the source of the player's spells, since there isn't much other way of just popping spells into your spellbook when you level since he is in the world's largest dungeon. So it is granting him power somewhat, and it will be at a price, mwuahaha.

Are you and the guy who's playing the wizard good friends? Here's a wacky idea I did once. I had the book talking to the character, all the time. THe poresence was always there in asort of telpathic way. To simulate this in between sessions I'd call him up and be the book, send him e-mails from the book, become the books when were just hanging out watching movies and stuff etc. It worked great to let him understand what his character was going through, but if we weren't good friends I think he would have told me to shove it rather fast.

That's really excellent... although, probably at some point I'd question your sanity. :)
